I don't mind them in casual settings like forums and social media, but you won't catch me using them at work or school...they are annoying to me :p

I never heard of a contraction before (besides the child labour kind) suspect.gif

I had the joy of learning about contractions in English Language and E. Literature. They were always grouped with Elisions.

This topic is the first time I've used them in nearly 2 years.

*googles* ah right. So I've, It's You're, they're called contractions? I never knew that and I use them all the time, don't most people?

I suppose a lot of people do without realising what they are called, I didn't know it until I studied it at A Level. I suppose it's like people using nouns but not knowing whether they are abstract, proper, collective or concrete nouns :p

Yep, most everyone uses them. They just kind of bug me. Especially if I am trying to be serious and concise in what I am writing.

Example:

Niamh, I'd like you to please arrive at work early. It's your responsibility to be on time, and it's not acceptable to be constantly late almost every day.

or

Niamh, I would like you to please arrive at work early. It is your responsibility to be on time, and it is not acceptable to be constantly late almost every day.

See the difference?

I am just being nitpicky. :p

I don't generally use them when writing papers or in professional correspondence. However, I do use them in day to day typing, internal e-mails, and forum posts.

I find there are worse problems from people than contractions.

Like writing a huge paragraph (which in all honesty could be at least two or three paragraphs, if not more) with NO punctuation and all the words are text speak. There are several people who do that on my facebook and on another forum and it is such an eyesore. I cannot work out what they are trying to say for the life of me.

Apparently my Mom sends you e-mail as well? :24:

Oh no does she write like that?

When I was in Secondary School (I think I was 15 or 16) a boy sent me a love letter. It probably should have been viewed as romantic but it was 2 pages (both sides) without a single punctuation mark, capital letter or paragraph and text speak (u, lyk, bby, luv). I just couldn't concentrate on what he was saying so I sent it back to him after correcting and adding everything he missed out with a massive NO THANKS written in red ink. :surrender

Oh gawd, Kate. Does she ever. :24:

It's funny too, because my Mom has a graduate level Nursing degree.

She will send me e-mails that are literally four or five paragraphs, and all in one, and with ZERO punctuation.

I literally told her if she wanted me to respond, she needed to format them properly. I was not trying to be a dick to my Mom, but I WILL NOT and just CANNOT bring myself to read that. It gives me an f'ing headache.

When writing papers in college contractions were frowned upon. However in message boards or chat or texting contract all you like. Anagram if you like. If I don't understand I will ask.

I do not blame you, it really is an eyesore and gives me a headache too.

What surprises me the most about some of the people who write in one massive block of unreadable text on facebook, is the fact they are English Language students at college or University.
