I know it's not illegal Kyle, I still think it's a huge overreaction.

But then, we have very different ideas about when guns are appropriate over here. Cultural differences, what can you do.

I've lived here my whole life and I don't agree an armed society is a polite society :p don't feel bad.

There is a killer two streets over that you followed home, and you think that being armed isn't a good idea?

The world isn't all rocking horse people eating marshmallow pies, HK.

I think it's better to have it, and not need it, then need it and not have it.

Definitely in this case it would seem the best "arms" would be just not following a thief with a knife around his shady neighborhood :p

Yeah, I agree with the cops, dangerous thing you did there. Don't know how it works in the US but if the guy is a murderer, over here he would be on a life license so would be hauled straigh back to jail for that shit. What did they do about him?

Yea, I'm wondering what someone like that was doing walking the streets anyway. If he's a convicted murderer and likes to steal mowers/show his knife to people, he should be in prison.

Frankly 15 or so years is about what a lot of murderers serve (obviously I am just guessing about this guy and when he got out, what he did, etc). Unless it's 1st degree, they hang you up with 15-35 years and you serve 15 and get out on parole. Free again.

Yea, its ridiculous. People who commit murder should be also placed on probation for life.

Hmm. I don't think it's about cultural differences between countries. Some people view the world differently. I could never justify carrying a weapon or even having one in my house. Sure, it might get me killed some day, but I don't really believe that violence begets violence and all that.

So, don't worry, HK, it isn't just you. I don't get it either.

To play devil's advocate for a second consider this. You're speculating whether he murdered anyone or not. The Officer said he killed someone. That could have been in self defense for all you know. Although if he's stealing a lawn mower he is without question a scum bag, that doesn't make him a murderer by default though. :dunno

I can't recall the time line norm for parolees regarding reporting to a parole agent (I think its like 10 years, you're expected to report to an agent and meet the terms of parole), but they abscond so easily and don't get picked up until they've hurt someone else somehow.

Yea, you're right. I made those comments on the assumption that he murdered someone. I'm willing to adjust my opinion to different circumstances though.

So how did the cop know it was him ? Why has he not been arrested ? The cops are right though. Nothing is worth getting killed over. It is just a lawn mower. I know you wanted to help though. I just don't get if the cop know who he is then why not arrest him. Glad to hear your alright. I take it your brother need a different "vacation".

The term of your parole depends on your sentence.

When you get 15 to life. The 15 is the bare minimum you must serve, the life means you are on parole for life.
So 10-15 means you serve a bare minimum of 10 and you are on parole until the full 15 years after sentence.

Does that make sense?

Oh, and they have every right to keep you locked up the maximum. Then you get out with no parole.

Yep. I really hope so too. Considering he's seen you, seen your brother, probably seen where you live, AND he knows your car.

I'm not competent enough to process and understand such a simple concept, plz to re-explain?

My knowledge of parole is a victim of not working with parole officers. I assumed there was a hearing upon re-entry that established a specific timeline, not just a reciprocal amount of reporting time to the sentence itself. I know quite a good deal about sentencing guidelines from being present for so many criminal calls and doing data entry. It's all pretty fascinating to my nerd self.

For those of you that have a problem with arming yourself, you need to understand that different parts of the world are very different.

For me... I live in the middle of the woods. I could gut a pig in the back yard and nobody would ever hear it's squeal. That's pretty scarry
A mile down the road is a very large trailer park with very questionable people living their (typical punk kids and rednecks)
Before I moved in, my house was broken into 3 times (old lady use to live here by herself and when she went out, people knew the house was empty)
We also live on the county line, so we are as far as you can get from our police station 25 minutes to an hour depending on where they are patrolling.
So when we moved into the house, the first thing we did was install a monitored alarm that will call the police. But since we knew it would take forever for them to get here, we also got a Doberman. And of course we have guns...
So if you want to break into our house and the alarm doesn't scare you away, you will need to make your way through my 90lb doberman to get to me holding a high capacity firearm. I would prefer the police come and take care of the problem, but I cannot count on them getting there in time... I NEED protection. And I won't ever apologize for having guns.

quit being a wise ass... :p

and maybe it's not the same in all states, but I'm 99.9% sure that this is the way it works here in PA. You are given a min-max time and that alone determines your length of parole.....
