I live in an OK neighborhood - it's in between a really nice neighborhood and a really bad one.

I get foot traffic ALL the time down my street. People steal shit from the nice neighborhood and walk it through mine to their neighborhood.

My lawn mower got stolen along with my mom's and my neighbor's all in one week. I'm fucking pissed.

Tonight I was up doing some things. It was 1am, and I see a guy riding his bike with something on his back and a lawn mower behind him. He was hauling ass. Well I pop up, yell at my brother to hop in the car with me (he's visiting for a few days) and we get in my car and follow this guy.

I caught up with him and I ask "Hey is that your lawn mower?" and he said "No." And then he pulled a knife out so I pulled away from him in my car. At that point, he gets off the bike and starts walking towards my car with the lawn mower and the thing still on his back. I tell my brother to call the cops. The dispatcher says she'll send some one out. In my town that means they'll come out when they feel like it.

So this guy eventually stops following me, and he turns and starts walking towards the really bad neighborhood so I follow him. I want to keep track of him for when the cops come. Well he starts cutting through bushes and empty lots. I was in my 4Runner so I was tempted to follow him, but I didn't know what was on the other side of the bushes.

Finally the guy seems to get to his house. So I go to turn around - I pass it up, then I turn around at the end of his street and I drive back by to make sure he's still there. As I drive by I see he had two bricks in his hand and he threw them at my car (and he was only like three feet away).

We call the cops again and this time I tell them he has a knife, and now he's throwing bricks at my car can they hurry the hell up? And I tell them where we are.

The cops get there, they lecture me on following the guy. They said people have done the same thing I did, only to get beaten to death by a hammer or shot by the neighbor. The cop said if I want a job, they're hiring but that I need to not ever do this again.

Another cop shows up, and I know him from past occurences in my neighborhood - Corporeal McNair. He's cute :) And he was like "Miss W, you don't know who you're dealing with. He killed a guy in 94."

So yeah let's just say I'm scared. Lesson learned. It just pisses me off that people think that for some reason I can afford a new lawn mower when all they do is steal them!!

My car also now has a hole in it he threw the brick so hard....Can you imagine if he had thrown that in my window? Or had a gun at his house? He had already pulled the knife on me...

Yeah, I agree with the cops, dangerous thing you did there. Don't know how it works in the US but if the guy is a murderer, over here he would be on a life license so would be hauled straigh back to jail for that shit. What did they do about him?

Get into some shooting sports. Buy a gun, practice, practice, practice, then get a conceal carry permit (if allowed in your state). Have a nice lightweight 20 gauge pump shotgun laying around the house to boot. Never hurts to take up some martial classes as well. Or just move.

At 0100? Sorry, night the brightest bulb in the factory.

This is EXACTLY what I was trying to say in that thread about the domestic where people were saying they would jump in. First off, don't EVER follow somebody like that again. To put it in perspective, even though I know you already get it, you could've given your life for a lawnmower...a lawnmower that didn't even belong to you!!! Second...if you followed him around you weren't where you initially told dispatch you were...so had you not called back them back nobody ever would've gotten to you b/c they would've had no idea where you were.

I would rather sit and watch someone rob everything I own from my house than try and do something about it and put myself in more danger.

But I'm a pussy :p

Yes, people shooting at each other in the street will make things much better, especially if they injure or kill an innocent passerby. A stolen lawn mover is much more important than peoples safety.:sarcasm

What the fuck? Carry a gun is considered sensible advice on a par with 'earn self-defence'?

Joe, most of the time I let your comments pass me by because we're not similar people and that's just life, but seriously? You think Janie having a firearm would have made that situation better?

Learning ways to defend yourself, I can agree with that. I'd be even more inclined to agree with not chasing random thieves down the streets. Somehow, carrying a weapon isn't in the same basket.

First off, I mentioned it was stupid to follow the person at 0100.

Second off, I mentioned to move.

Third, if you live in a shit hole were people don't care about how their actions can impact others when violence is more than option (taking against you), yes, learn how to use a gun, practice with it and carry it.

Janie said she doesn't live in a shit hole, she just happens to live near one. Which is true of quite a lot of people. I still don't see how encouraging people to carry a weapon that could easily kill someone is a good idea. You think a better conclusion to Janie's story would be that she shot the guy in the leg or worse, accidentally seriously injured him?

People are bastards the world over, you don't have to be living in a bad neighbourhood to be a victim of crime. Should everyone carry guns, just in case? The obvious solution here is that the guy either shouldn't have been confronted at all or on him pulling a knife, she should have driven off. I honestly can't fathom why you think the next logical step is that she carry a weapon herself. What possible good could come of that, compared to how much bad might?

That's seriously one of the most reckless things I have ever heard :(
Very glad it turned out the way it did, because I suspect if you'd tried this again, you and your brother would be dead.

I'm just really naive despite things that have happned to me. I just can't get it in my head that people are bad. I just always think the best of people.

I know this was dumb. And it was more than a lawnmower. It was the principle that people think they can skull around at 1am and violate people by stealing, vandalising, etc.

I worked really hard to get where I am and I would never hurt anyone. I hate guns etc. And my brain just refuses to believe bad things will happen. Which is bad I know. I need to learn to think more in these situations and think the worst.

Don't worry I'm not doing it again.

I think it's about having a balance. Be nice to everyone off the bat, it's good for your mental health I think, and trust those in your inner circle, but don't trust those you have no reason to.

For instance, I hide my laptop every day when I'm at work, and I do not leave anything at all in my car. If I have to, it goes in my trunk. The way I see it, a lot of people are opportunists with little concept of consequences and zero empathy. They don't care about what it took you to get your lawnmower, they just know they need it or want it for whatever reason.

I always do my best to protect my stuff. Cuts down my chances hopefully of being furious about injustice, but it does happen, at least for that moment, and it's a part of life :(

Janie I am so glad you didn't get hurt. I can understand the impulse. When I get mad I react and I can see me doing something like following someone in a car and finding out where they lived. What I hope is that this guy steal from someone who does have there own knife or gun and it's the last thing he steals. Yes what you did was dumb, but I truly understand the impulse. I have a gun myself, but I wouldn't have gone home to get it, for one it's not registered and I don't have a license to carry for another as mad as I get about someone stealing I wouldn't kill anyone over any object.

An armed society is a polite society, manners are good when one may have to back up his actions with his life.

I agree with Joe, and no disrespect to the non Americans, but I don't expect you to understand or agree.

Yeah well I prefer having manners because that's what decent people do, not because the guy in front of me might shoot me if I'm rude.

What Joe said isn't out of line. Like it or not, Janie is legally allowed to own a weapon if she wishes. Lots of law abiding citizens own weapons and know how to use them properly.

Some of us were even TRAINED by the DoD to use weapons, and I don't mean go to the range once a year to qualify. I mean actually trained. :)
