When the iPad 2 began selling out in stores, we balked at the outrageous prices people were paying resellers on eBay. Dropping over $1,000 on a device that you could purchase for $500 if you just bit down and wait a few weeks was lunacy. Turns out we hadn't seen true lunacy until today. A 17-year-old kid from the Anhui province in China reportedly hawked his kidney for 22,000 yuan (roughly $3,400) so he could have enough money to buy an iPad 2.

The teenager told the Shanghai times that he really "wanted to buy an iPad but could not afford it." So the little iAddict got in contact with a broker who helped him arrange the procedure at the Chenzhou hospital without his parents being none the wiser. Despite doing the operation on the sly, the boy's parents got wind of what was going on when he returned home feeling ill. They called the cops, but the broker was long gone by then, according to the report. Even worse, the officials at Chenzhou hospital had no record of the operation because the wing it was performed in was contracted to a Fujian businessman.

We hope it doesn't get worse than this.

Then that's the risk donors take.

I'm not arguing that.

However, you can't justify this action to me in any way. Selling your kidney on the black market is an act of lunacy. If this kid is 17 and already makes dumb ass decisions like this, I'm scared for him when he comes an adult. YMMV.

Oh, and as far as saving a life, he sold his kidney to a broker, he didn't go donate it to a dying patient. I would not give him too much credit.

Well, it was borderline racist but i kinda said the same thing to my mom the other day talking about clothing sizes so I guess I'm just as bad.

You're right.

It was stupid for him to sell it in the matter he did.

However, giving donors the opportunity to sell their organs on a legal organ market could increase supply of much needed organs.

There lies to answer to the conflict with selling your organs.

So he sells something you need for a "lifetime"... for something that will have the novelty value of 1-2 years... What he gonna do after that, when the iPad 3 comes out?... Sell his leg...

Exactly, it's a conflict that can be solved. I don't see anything happening with it anytime soon though.

If ever.

Organ harvesting for profit, regardless of motivation -- will always be met with MAJOR resistance from the masses.

People may be more inclined to switch their stance if they were assured that it would be heavily regulated to ensure safety and prevent wrongdoing.

Agreed. It would take an organization with the power of the UN or something though. Maybe the World Health Organization (WHO). I could see them making it happen.
