I can take a compliment, but then I also like myself :)

The only person I ever fuss to is my boyfriend, to get him to say nice things to me :p and even then I don't mean it. Hell, I hardly ever do it these days anyway.

It is tricky though, because you're taught from a young age to be modest. You can't just come out and say 'tell me I'm beautiful' because that's big-headed or vain, as if you think you deserve compliments. So I can see why these girls say awful things about their looks, like Joe said, they want someone to reassure them that they are beautiful, but they have the idea it'll look bad to just ask for that affirmation.

I remeber dating someone who always wanted to hear something endearing to her....then she would come back with something is "wrong" found out she never heard endearing words from her parents...I felt bad, but she got pretty petty about things and accused me of lying and saying things just to say them...that hurt because I thought her esteem would have been rising..then I found her to be binging and drinking....

I definitely try my hardest not to deflect every nice thing my bf says about me...it will only make him stop saying them.

I can tell when someone is just fishing for a complement and will usually oblige. It's not a lie to tell a pretty girl that she's pretty and if she needs to hear it, cool.

The girl in question was different. She KNEW that she was gorgeous. Good God, if I was a girl I'd have gone lesbian for a weekend for a shot at this girl. The only thing was that no matter what you said, she would ignore the 99.2% of her that was PERFECT and would focus like a laser on that 0.8%.

"Hey. Saw your pic in "Validate me." DAMN!!"
"Thanks, but I hate my eyebrows. I had a crying fit last night when I saw them in the mirror."
"Ummm... what? They look fine."
"Quit bullshitting me. I screwed them up. I look like a failed science experiment."
"You do realize you're nuts, right. You're GORGEOUS. Ask any male over puberty."
"Yeah, if you're into deformed freaks."

As a guy, we say something and immediately hit this... WALL of self-loathing and doubt and denial that doesn't make us sad- it pisses us off. We think "How is it humanly possible for somebody to be that blind to what EVERYBODY else can see? What does it take to POUND our way thru and get it into your thick skulls that you TRULY are beautiful and we aren't just blowing smoke up your ass?" :mad

That's honestly someone getting off on hating themselves. It becomes such a habit, they don't know how to do anything but default to hyperbolic exclamations of how ugly they are. Even an ugly person wouldn't feel that bad, kinda thing...

Oh jesus, I don't do anything like that =/ She sounds like she got more issues than low self esteem.

Okay, that was only funny to me.

And yes...we hear it and immediately want to roll our eyes and walk out the door. I literally stopped going to a convenience store that's on the way to my work simply b/c the cashier ALWAYS hit on the girls from our department. He would always say "morning, beautiful" and I would cringe!!!

Um..... would you gals feel better if we.......... um.... told the truth? :D

I guess it depends on if the woman is comfortable with the guy calling her beautiful. Me personally i cant take a compliement for shit and even men i date get weird looks when calling me beautiful or pretty. I normally explain this upfront though so they know its not that they are doing the complimenting wrong its just i cant deal with it :24:

Well we don't want to hear "you look like shit today" BUT "morning, beautiful" loses it charm when you've said it to 2 other females who are on my shift and stopped in on their way to work, LOL Nothing against uniform fetishists...it's just NOT flattering that a vagina and a uniform is all it takes to get you worked up. ;)

So if I'm hearing you correctly there should only be one beautiful woman around at a time. That would suck.

I've never said " good morning beautiful " to anyone other than my wife ( which was a lie at the time cuz she looks like shit in the morning ;) ) and if I had a death wish I would test out " good morning ugly " . Then I would ask the gal(s) which one they liked better. :24:

and stopped in on their way to work, LOL Nothing against uniform fetishists...it's just NOT flattering that a vagina and a uniform is all it takes to get you worked up. ;)

Uniforms never cranked me up except for the thought of them coming off and getting chucked in the corner. I have a lot of respect for a uniform in a corner. :D

I'll admit that I didn't read the whole thing here, but calling me Beautiful is not high on my radar as being offensive. I generally say "Thanks" or say nothing and move along. I don't let small things bother me. Unless the person says it constantly, and I have a reason to focus on his behaviour. :):)

The way I see it, who does it really hurt? Some people just talk like that, it's not necessarily done to annoy or insult anybody. I tend to call people 'doll' or 'love' or 'sweety'....it's just the way I am so when a man walks passed me and says good morning beautiful, or something along those lines, I just say good morning....I've even been known to hit him with a 'hey there handsome'....it's just a harmless greeting and even if it's meant to be a tad flirty.....so what, is it really all THAT bad? What gets me more is when you're having a conversation with a man and he never makes eye contact with you, mainly cause his eyes are busy elsewhere....now THAT'S worth complaining about, I don't mind them looking but at least come up for air once in a while, it's verrrrrrry rude and an insult to my intelligence!!!
