I can take a compliment, but then I also like myself

and even then I don't mean it. Hell, I hardly ever do it these days anyway.
It is tricky though, because you're taught from a young age to be modest. You can't just come out and say 'tell me I'm beautiful' because that's big-headed or vain, as if you think you deserve compliments. So I can see why these girls say awful things about their looks, like Joe said, they want someone to reassure them that they are beautiful, but they have the idea it'll look bad to just ask for that affirmation.
