Trying to get out of going to a "family" gathering without coming off as a prick

So this Sunday my stepmom's family is holding a picnic at the park, and I'm expected to go too for some reason. Now I can't stand any of these people and want nothing to do with their picnic but I don't want to just come out and say that I want nothing to do with them, any suggestions on getting out of this?
