Did anyone else hear that this happened 8 years to the day of Bush's mission accomplished speech? And it was 66 years to the day that Germany announced Hitler's death???

weird

Wills and Kate got married the same day as Hitler and Braun.

Easter is a busy time.

Its Confirmed !!!!

Just reported on the news that DNA testing done on the body of the person killed yesterday WAS IN FACT Bin Laden.
I hope this news will now give the friends and families of those killed in 9/11 some sort of closure.
The war is not over and there will be paybacks from Bin Laden's supporters.
But the head of the snake has been cut off and I hope he rots in hell.

A lot of people I've been hearing, not on this board, think that it will do a lot, but probably not.
I have a feeling that more Americans abroad will become targets and the end result might be more beheadings. Anyone thinks the bad guys are just going to sit back and do nothing after their leader is killed has rocks in their head.

Welcome to America...where money is more important than the lives of 3000 people killed in terrorist attacks that were masterminded by Osama Bin Laden!!! LOL

LOL! no! c'mon that's not what I meant!

But this news does give closure to many whose lives were changed on 9/11

see, what I mean is - how does it really give these people closure? when they were first told it was the Iraqi's who done it.

Also he may have been the mastermind, but 1 - it doesn't bring them back to life and 2 - there were a lot more others who had a hand in it.

I would feel closure when al qaeda was extinguished and there was peace in the middle east. Until then it just feels like a tit for tat.

Your memory must be a little fuzzy Janie. Iraq didn't come into play until later on. Within hours of the attacks, the connections between al-Qaeda and the suspected hijackers were known. Hell, the identities of the suspected hijackers were pretty much known within hours as well.

Iraq was thrown into the mix because it supposedly had weapons of mass destruction and supported al-Qaeda. The whole reason we went into Afghanistan when we did was because the Taliban were harboring al-Qaeda and that was where bin Laden was thought to be.

This is accurate. The US public was thrown off track down the stretch regarding Iraq, but it was clear Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda were responsible at the time. I think there is, as much as humanly possible, a chance for closure in this for those victims' families. No loved one is ever brought back to life when a murderer is captured/killed, but it sure beats knowing he is still out there.

In response to you and retro - I know that was the case, but I don't think that's how the average American saw it.

Which can be still seen in how most Americans view Muslims and basically any other person from the Middle East.

But I do agree with what I bolded. I can see that.

I really don't see where you're getting that from. Nobody was talking about Iraq in the wake of the attacks, it was all focused on bin Laden, al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and Afghanistan. The fact of the matter is that people were not told that Iraq was behind the attacks, which was your original assertion. I don't know of anyone that, in the days, weeks, and months following 9/11, actually thought the Iraq was behind it. Especially with all of the media coverage stating otherwise.

Really?

" At 2:40 p.m. in the afternoon of September 11, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was issuing rapid orders to his aides to look for evidence of Iraqi involvement, according to notes taken by senior policy official Stephen Cambone. "Best info fast. Judge whether good enough hit S.H." — meaning Saddam Hussein — "at same time. Not only UBL" (Osama bin Laden), Cambone's notes quoted Rumsfeld as saying. "Need to move swiftly — Near term target needs — go massive — sweep it all up."

Point being? That was behind the scenes. When I said "nobody", I was referring to things being said publicly, as Janie's assertion was that people were told that Iraq was behind the attacks. Rumsfeld looking for evidence that Iraq was involved would be standard operating procedure... I would've been shocked if he didn't. We all know that they wanted to get rid of Saddam eventually (and did), so why not look for a reason to do it at the same time that they went after bin Laden.

What you've quoted doesn't contradict what I've said at all. The public was told that bin Laden and al-Qaeda were behind the attacks, and that they were being harbored in Afghanistan by the Taliban.

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.
