In a surprise, Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

AHA

So THATS Dizzy Rascal. He's playing at the big day out here in Jan, and my daughter got tickets.

She was most annoyed when I said I'd never heard of him

(back to scheduled programn)

There's a big difference between done nothing, and done little. Until a couple of years ago nobody knew he existed except Illinois, now he's the master of the fucking universe, cures cancer, makes childbirth a pleasure and conception a wonder. Jesus almighty people have gone batshit.
You also did mention in another thread I quote "we have an independent streak which many have died to protect" Another person said in that thread I quote "In the United States. americans have that independent streak, the desire to charter their own paths that hopefully leads to success"
So Obama is a classic example of a relatively unknown one term african-american senator who leap-frogged to prominence.
Usually we reward people for proven accomplishments. But we can also reward people for potential. Obama has received a lot of attention for his speech in Cairo reaching out an american hand to the world's muslims. The prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

Personally I think the Nobel Peace prize should have gone to one of the following

Morgan Tsvangirai
Aung San Suu Kyi (for the second time)
Even, possibly, Kevin Ruud

People who have actually already achieved something toward World Peace.

Why KRudd Pete?

Because he apologised?

Yup! Big step toward rectifying something that happened even within my life time. Also because he pulled out of Iraq ahead of deadline, he halted the racist John Howard policy and allowed Africans back into Australia and because he signed the Kyoto protocol. The guy has actually got on with what he said he would do.

All true, and I admire him for it. But a Nobel prize?

ALthough if Obama can get one for doing not much at all, I see your point.

Yeah, I think Morgan Tsvangira and Aung San Suu Kyi deserve it a lot more but if the're going to give it to Obama, I think a Western leader who has already followed through like Rudd deserves it more than him.:thumbup;)

Well, he's definitely doing SOMETHING right. We are one of the only countries not to be feeling the effects of the GFC too heavily.

Although to listen to Howards supporters, Its all Krudds fault, even though he'd only just come into office.

I'm happy to say I voted for him, and even my daughter made sure she got herself onto the electoral roll in time so she could too.

I think his actions about the GFC have still yet to be seen to work fully but I applaud him for his bravery in actually doing something positive toward sorting in it out with no dilly dallying about, pretty much like he has been throughout.:thumbup

Personally, I would disagree, I think, in general Americans are more scared of Socialism than black people, McCarthyism seems to be good and well in the USA and still involves a witch hunt against capitalists that arn't rabidly right wing, like Obama.
