Having gone through issues with sleeping since I was a child I would strongly suggest the sleep study.

I did the same thing...lay there for hours, finally fall asleep, wake up, fall back asleep...etc. I would only end up with a few hours of sleep each night and it was never good sleep.

Your sleep issue may not be as sever as mine was but I am now able to sleep all night long. I go to sleep around 11 or 12 and can sleep til 6 or so in the morning. It's amazing. Oh and I can sleep on my back now woo.

Really...get a sleep study. It may not be depression. Like you said you've had the issue for a while now.

BTW having a beer or two before bed is actually bad! It causes to the sleep issues. I found this out because I used to think if I had a beer before bed I would sleep better.

Let me state a couple of things again so it does not get confusing in case some want to follow this

For as long as I can remember I had trouble just getting to sleep. Once I got to sleep I used to be ok. Not nearly like now

Anyway it was just getting to sleep that used to be the problem. Once I got to sleep for even 15 minutes I could wake up and eat a meal and go right back to sleep.

Over the years I used to self medicate which did work to get to sleep. I realize that all is bad. I also realize that sleeping in will mess you up for the next couple of days after

My problem now is not getting to sleep. The ambien accomplishes that. My problem is getting a deep restful sleep past 3am - 4am most days. Even the Ambien CR does no better nor does the old style sleeping pills.

I bet if I kept track there would not be more than one day a month I sleep past 4am.

And there is not an issue with having to pee. I do not have to get up to do that as a rule.

And even though i wake up at 3am or so I can almost always fall back right to sleep. Except I wake up every 15 minutes or so and then sleep until about 6:15 when I get up to go to work.

let me know if the back issue works. i tend to sleep on my side or my tummy

I almost always sleep on my belly. I even bought new pillows to see if that would help.

I will report back tomorrow about how it goes tonite. If I can remember to start on my back.

To be honest I was kind of shocked when I woke up at 5am and was still on my back. If this works I might need to get one of those clocks that shines onto the ceiling :D

What time do you go to bed?

I am pretty consistent on going to bed at 11pm

Sometimes I get side tracked going chores or watching the news and end up closer to 11:30

Weekends I might stay up close to midnite but for the last few months not many times would it be past 11:30 on the weekend.

I typically wake up 8-9 am on the weekend. Forcing myself out of bed earlier is like pulling teeth.

This very well could be just a slow process and the depression still having an influence. It is just that for the last 4-5 months I have been doing much better at trying to go by the book on sleeping and still am tired as all get out at work. Before this I thought it was a food issue as typically after lunch I would crash. But lately once I get the guys out of the yard at work around 8am I get back to my desk and could go to sleep

Maybe that's all the sleep your body needs? I use to sleep 10-12 hours a night, then realized I was oversleeping and I only really needed 7 to 7 1/2 hours..I know some people that get 4 to 5 hrs a night and that's all they need.

Another thing I was reading about in that book was that peoples temps usually dropped in the mid afternoon or after a midday meal, I ALWAYS hit a little slump around 430 or so. .I move around a bit and it goes away.

I might have to buy that book

Library does not have it

But I probably would not be one to follow it as rigidly as you appear to be able to

Thanks again for your input

Glad I could help and honestly all I did was get the gist of what it was saying and applied that. I was so tired of being tired that I was willing to try anything. I didn't follow it to the t or anything, I actually didn't even finish the book!

Well I did a sleep study three weeks ago.

There is a boatload of data they have to pour over. The aide who was there said he saw signs of apnea when I got up the next morning.

Today my doctor calls and says that I do not have apnea but they want to test for something else. Go figure eh

So when they can schedule it I will go in and get tested for narcolepsy. I mentioned this before to my doctors and they kind of ignored me. I think I have a touch of it. Never fall asleep out of the blue but I have other symptoms.

I kind of am relieved and yet pissed because if I had apnea I would have dreaded wearing that mask but the relief would have made getting used to it worth the effort.

Do you have back problems??? My chiropractor yells at me when I tell him I've been sleeping on my stomach. :( Well, he doesn't yell...but he lectures me. LOL

I don't have any back problems

Not looking forward to this next text. I have to go in at 7am and every 2 hours attempt to take a 20 minute nap. That goes on until at least 2pm
