So....(and I promise I'm not trying to be a "smart ass" now) why have a gun for protection, if its locked away and not loaded. By the time you unlocked your cabinet, found the ammo and loaded up, you'd be dead already wouldn't you?

If you reference my post, you will see I have a pistol, and a 12g that don't remain in the safe. I can't speak for my other gun loving Americans though! :D

I stated some guns were loaded, however, all are "locked away". The guns are locked away due to children. The guns however are in close proximity and easy access (as long as you know how to open the security measure) if needed for protection.

Simple solution for a shotgun is a lock box on the wall. Gun is secure, locked on the wall (and loaded), but you can't discharge the gun until it comes out of the "lock box". Handgun mini vaults have a code that tell me if anyone has tried to tamper with it.

When there were no kids in the house, some guns were lying around hiding. Now, EVERYTHING is secure.

Thought as much;)

Next question....why have so many? You dont need 50 or whatever guns for "survival" do you? Or is there a zombie apocolypse looming I dont know about;)

Nope, not at all.

The safe has a digital fingerprint lock and pops open when I put my fingers on it. The gun is a Smith & Wesson 9mm M&P with a plug in the chamber (solid plastic bullet) and a full clip in it. All I have to do is pull the slide back (something a child could not do with this gun, it requires a very firm and steady pull) and it will eject the plastic bullet and chamber a live round. All this can be accomplished in less than 15 seconds. The same amount of time it would take to go grab a bat, call the police or anything else I would do for protection.
You also nee to factor in that this person would need time to break-in and he would need to deal with my Doberman.

I do not live in a bad area, quite the contrary. But since I live in an isolated area and there are no neighbors to hear if something was going on, I need to take steps to safeguard my family myself. Like I said earlier, the soonest law enforcement would get to my house is 1 hour. That's one hour I would need to keep someone at bay, alone.
