Only 8 days to go until XP becomes EOL. No more updates or security patches from MS, despite have almost a third of the market share! 30% are still running XP, are you one of them?

Kinda sad as it is a pretty solid OS,many people still like it over seven as they got used to XP and anything else presents a new learning curve for them..XP simply fit their needs and they didnt need any new features

XP was definitely a decent OS.

But time moves on, hardware gets old and OSs get stale.
I had taken my XP offline several years ago and used it as a standalone and only recently replaced it because it had a lot of hours on it and I needed reliability.

I do like Win 7.
I like the performance of new hardware a lot more ;)

I have an xp rig dedicated for work purposes...its old I got it when xp was first released....slow?
Yeah...with the updates being larger than the os its to be expected. ..but it will do what I need with 384m of ram ..fans are getting loud...need to keep an eye out for a new rig.
I just want to swap out the tower.
I am not looking forward to moving all the files and installing the apps again..which some may not work with a newer os.

I did run into several issues with older apps that ran under XP ( and earlier--Win2k), but wouldn't run properly under Win 7.
That's likely to be an increasing issue as time passes and new OS's come out.
I went with VirtualBox and installed Win2k into a virtual machine to cover that issue.

I presently own 3 XP machines. I plan to update the one laptop and see if it will run windows 7. The 2 old desktops do not have the capoacity to upgrade.

I run a copy of xp with virtual box from time to time on my 7 laptop mainly as a guinea pig for an unfamiliar apps...that does give me an idea I could run xp on the new rig and just share a folder.

If the laptop doesnt have a gig a half of ram or more..it won't be a very pleasant experience. ..I have two gigs and there are times my unit gets to swapping (releasing ram then rewriting it from the page file..rinse repeat)
Also known a paging or thrashing.
Granted..that will be will alot of stuff running...but aome apps use alot of ram...it seems the more ram they put in machines less effort is made to optimize apps to use less ram.

Isn't that shared folder is done through a virtual networked connection and is a path for something malicious to jump from guest to host or host to guest?

Yes but It can but it can only acess that folder..lets say you are in xp and put a file in a shared folder you created on your 7 side...that is far as the xp can see into your 7 install.
Now if you clicked on that file from the 7 side you could execute it there and infect your 7 side
Also you can set up your xp to only be able to read that folder and not write to it.
So if while in 7 you find an app you arent to sure about..you put it in that shared folder..then go into xp then make a copy and drop it on the xp side install and check it out.
I use the xpmode plugin vmlite by virtualbox..runs great for a virtual machine.

That would be my concern, so I don't share folders between my win7 Home and Win2k virtual machine, that's internet aware. I keep Win2k blind.
I have a Win7 pro machine with the builtin XPmode set up to share a common folder, but it's a standalone computer and XPmode isn't really used for anything other than curiosity.

Not familiar with vmlite. Howtogeek infers vmlite plus xpmode only works with 7 Pro.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/12309/install-xp-mode-with-virtualbox-using-the-vmlite-plugin/
But I see no info on that at vmlite.com.
Is that correct?
If it only works with 7Pro, what's it's advantage over the existing MS setup for xpmode in 7Pro?

The advantages are snapshots and the same settings you get with virtual box.
The ms version mainly is designed to let you use xp apps
With the virtual box vmlite you are getting the same experience you get while using 2000 in other words full featured virtual box that you have with 2000 but now it will be xp.
the shared folder if you set it up is safe enough..I used xp to test many av solutions using the virtual machine
never infected my 7.
I got my copy of 7 ultimate free from Microsoft which does everything pro will do as far as I know.
I agreed to demo (house party)w7 after receiving it.
I will go to the PC after this post and get you the version number of vmlite..it is older as I had no reason to update it.

Here is the link within the help menu of the app
Also a screen shot of the workstation.
"Settings" is grayed out as the virtual machine is saved{hibernated} rather than shut down.
If you are familiar with virtual box you can figure out this software in short order..its essentially the same thing..but optimized for xp.
I have run Ubuntu in the past it ran pretty crappy...however xp runs very well with vmlite

I just as well mention blue stacks for android while we are on virtual machines lol
It lets you runs apps{android} on your pc by installing a virtual os{which it comes with} within bluestacks..then you can check apps for android.
It runs ok but could be better

The laptop has 2 gigs of ram. I have a netbook running windows 7 starter, I added a second gig of ram to it because it only came with 1 gig.

I've done a few more searches on vmlite.
It, plus xpmode, only function on Win7 Pro and up. Activation appears to occur automatically.
So activation becomes an issue for Win7 Home Premium when installing any legal version of an XP virtual machine. This is why I went with Win2k on my Win7 Home. I already owned a retail version I could move around without any hassle.

The way I use virtual machines, I don't see any advantage to vmlite.

But it is always handy to have alternatives available.

Have you tried running a win9x virtual machine in vmlite?
