I find it hard to believe that so many people think this is a good idea. Why in the world is this even an issue...and who the hell is pushing for this!?!?!?

County plans to offer single-gender classes

The Greene County School District voted Friday night to allow parents to choose gender-separate classes in grades 3-8 for math, science, social studies and language arts. The move came after the district backed away from a mandate for all of the public school students in the county be separated by gender.
Superintendent Shawn McCollough plans to survey all the parents to find out how many are interested in the single-gender alternative. Until then, McCollough said he won't know how much the change is going to cost or how much extra space or faculty the school district will need.
The plan was presented with few details during a three-hour meeting.
In two separate 3-2 votes Friday board members approved single-gender options at the district's two elementary schools.
The elementary schools now will be called "elementary academies" after the district incorporates sixth grade into Greensboro Elementary and Union Point Elementary.
Board members voted unanimously, however, for single-gender classes at Anita White Carson Middle School.
The school now will be a junior high school and encompass only seventh and eighth grades.

I heard something on tv the other day that kids benefit from single sex classes. They were saying that boys were more likely to put more effort into english classes because it's not seen as a "girl" subject. And I definitely think hormones have a lot to do with it too, although, on an elementary school level? I don't know...

Options are a good thing. Not all of us have the ability to learn in the exact same environment. Therefor having different avenues to explore will help these kids greatly..

That's just rediculous....How can you impress upon young minds the importance of learning to communicate with other genders/cultures and so on if you blind them from the very existence?

Mind numbing, don't improve the public education system, just re-arrange it to make it look like your doing something.

Children can learn to communicate with the other sex outside of school. Plus, I know of a few all boy schools that join together with all girl schools to create a event where the boys and girls can interact. But without choice, those who are failing because they are distracted by the other sex, are up shit's creek...

True, but you do see my point? Reading, writing and arithmatic should be the fundementals, that's what we should be focusing on as well, all this beaurocracy is killing the system.

Interaction across all social and economic boundaries is how we squash future republicans:D

Are they talking about just certain classes being segregated and the rest of the time they aren't? Like gym class, home ec, etc...

I think something like that might be a good OPTION. Give them a choice to be in a segregated math class, but lunch isn't. Give them an option to take a segregated English class, but gym isn't.... :dunno
