Kind of a spin off from Sadie's thread:

How many members, specifically women, would hesitate before pulling over for a cop on a deserted stretch of highway?

I have thought about this myself before. I would not stop because you never know who he really is and what he wants.

I've read Desperation more than once so in the back of my mind I might be wondering if it was in fact a possessed cop.

But realistically, the chances of that are fairly slim and I certainly don't think saying 'I didn't pull over because you might have been a supernatural maniac' would go down so well, so I'd pull over as soon as I safely could.

It's sad that yeah, sometimes terrible things happen to people through deception and trickery, but those times are rare and noteworthy, not everyday occurrences, so life has to continue as normal.

I have it in my mind that I would pop my flashers on, slow down, call the cops and ask if there is someone pulling me and to let them know I'm going to a well lit area. Part of me worries that would make things worse, but part of me hopes they'd understand.

I also have a plan for if I'm being followed. And no, that's not my being paranoid.

Maybe we don't have the same level of issue with people impersonating cops over here? :dunno my first thought if I was being pulled over would be 'oh god what's wrong with my car? was I speeding?' not about whether they were actually up to no good.

But then to be fair, we have less of the 'desert highway' stuff going on over here. The worst you get where I live is out in the sticks, but even then you're never very far from a village or town.

I surely wont!! :ninja

However, I will put on my hazard light and slow down to acknowledge the cop trying to pull me over. That will signal him, I have seen him and but *street smart* practice to pull over where there's more light and more people to witness anything, just in case!

Incidents of drivers being pulled over by a fake cop on deserted, not well-lit places had rampantly occurred on I-5 ( Grapevine area they call it- heavily wooded, lots of deserted places) 2 years ago here in Cali. The fake cop had been raping, killing and stealing stuffs from motorists :ninja

I used to drive that route every week! CHPs ( Cali Highway Patrol) then were giving out flyers to inform motorists of such incidents and informing them of the street smart thing to do. The thing I mentioned above is what they advised on!

I guess here, impersonation happens typically for criminal gangs who are planning big things. e.g. Brinks Mat and what happened there. Not saying it's never happened for other things though...

I have has this convo with a cop believe it or not.

He told me that if it's an unmarked car and that you aren't certain pull over and call the police and ask them to confirm that they have a car there .. also if the cop comes to your window ask him to call a marked cruiser and that you are nervous of the situation...

He said they should understand.

I would stop.... then call 911 and see if they were legitimate. I'd keep my doors locked and the engine running. I'd also open my window just a crack to tell the officer what I was doing. Then I'd ask for his name, badge number, department, etc.

It's happened quite frequently here over the past couple of decades. At least three guys that I can think of off the top of my head.

We women are indeed encouraged to call 911 and drive to the nearest well-lit public place in the event an umarked car is trying to pull us over. I've never heard about turning on the flashers, but that makes good sense too. Perhaps they said that and I just forgot that part.

I wouldn't pull over and stop cuz said fake-asshole could have a gun and since I don't carry mine in the car............... No, ever stop on the road. Keep driving while in contact w/911.

Having worked in law enforcement I can tell you, without a doubt, I would NEVER pull over at night in a deserted area for anyone. If the cop is legit, you putting on the flashers and calling dispatch (911) to confirm that he is a cop, he would completely understand and should not fault you for it. Although, if it turns out to be a real cop, he'll probably be a bit peeved. But he will understand.

Our unmarked cars aren't allowed to make traffic stops here. They call for a marked car and have them do it for them.

If you're in an area that's not well lit and don't feel safe pulling over, slow down and put your flashers on. Call 911 on your cellphone and give them your location and advise them that you are being pulled over and are proceeding to a more well-lit area. Dispatch will be able to confirm that it is a real police officer behind you and will relay to the officer what you are doing. Having said that, if you drive past a well-lit area while doing this, things probably aren't going to end well. LOL
