For me, I feel somewhat torn. Yes, I agree completely with the sentiment expressed - it shouldn't matter how a young woman dresses at a party, no one should feel they have any right to touch her.
On the other hand, would I be happy with my daughter walking out the door in the equivalent of two strategically placed handkerchiefs? Fuck no. The fear of rape is a small part of that but also to a degree, the knowledge that no matter what sort of person she is underneath, people are going to judge her and treat her differently if she dresses like a tart.
But then, I hope that by the time my kids are teenagers, I'll have had plenty of time to instill in them the sort of confidence that doesn't require stripper outfits anyway.

As with the other thread, if I were a parent I'd have to realize my child could be raped wearing anything. One has to teach children to have enough self-value and efficacy to "care enough to care" about themselves and be aware and cautious.
The clothing part, well, I would hope to not raise a girl who partied half naked and got drunk with random guys. I say that because that isn't who I am. I've seen a lot of girls do that and always found it so sad.
But something sticks out to me there. I don't think, as a society, we are repulsed enough by rape. I vaguely remember something detailing high school students who were witnessing a mock trial of a college aged date rapist, and apparently a majority of the students were laughing and carrying on about how there's no such thing as date rape.
How has this happened? Are we so hateful of feminism, people who lie about being raped, and anti-man sentiments that we can shrug off rape?? Fuck ideological differences. Rape happens. It's not acceptable. We need to stop accepting it.

It boggles my mind to even see how some of my cousins let their kids dress at such young age. And i am talking nothing but a few yrs older than my oldest daughter.. i will not give two shits what the problem or occasion is, they will never leave my house dressed like a whores.
So long as my daughters are living under the roof i pay for, she is under my responsibility, depends on me for a car, insurance or any financial need she will abide by my rules... and yes, paying for her college tuition is a financial need in my book so... both of them are looking at about mid 20's before they can do whatever they want.
She wants to dress like a ho and do and do ho things she will need to be:
self supported 9financially)
not in college (as in graduated)
living by her own means (her own place, paid with her own money)
and driving her own car (paid by her, or paid off by me, with her own insurance, under her name)

The answer hits the nail on its head when it says we need get rid of the "she was asking for it" mentality and raising our sons to become men who respect women no matter what they wear. To install in a woman that if she puts on a miniskirt and high heels she deserves to be raped is wrong. Not to educating the men and leaving them completely out of the equation is doubly-wrong. No rape victim was asking for it.
And as for "dressing appropriately" -- that is entirely a matter of opinion, now is it not?

Should I cover up from head to toe for the off chance I'll run into someone who thinks my hemline is 2 inches too short and the small of my back shows when I bend over and they have a sick mind and will see this as an invitation to rape me?
Oh but wait, how about when women who catch the eye of the rapist BECAUSE they are all covered up and they take it as a challenge?

Different types of clothes give different types of impressions -- uniform vs jeans n' a T; a skirt suit vs a tube top n' 6'' heels. Be aware of what impression clothes give and dress according to what impression you wish to portray.
Raise both your daughters and sons to know this.
Raise them to respect themselves and others, raise them to become men and women who you can be proud of, and raise them to always think twice and be careful.

If I had a daughter, I would make sure that she dressed modestly. For example, it would not be acceptable for her to show her cleavage or wear tiny shorts. I'd like her to dress in a way that doesn't show what doesn't need to be shown.
First reason is that I don't want my daughter to think that she needs to show her body to get attention - as a lot of girls do that for attention or approval of their physical image. Second reason is rape. Although I believe that no man has the right to touch a woman without her consent, women have to be modest too and prevent men from getting those thoughts in the first place so that they do not act on it. Both males and females need to be modest and cautious of what they wear and how they present themselves to society. I would not like my daughter to present herself as an object for viewing pleasure, but as a human being.

No. As I said, I'm just hoping by teaching her young that she needs to respect herself, and how important it is for a man to treat a woman well, she will never feel the desire to dress like a slut in order to get a man's attention. ive never known anyone to go out of their way to dress a certain way to attract people.. if they dress revealing its likely they do on a daily basis just because..
not that its true for everyone but a lot of women wear clothes for themselves. types of clothes i mean. growing up i wore low rise jeans and tank tops with flip flops and my hair a mess. i spent a lot of time on or near the beach. i dressed according to my activity. was my belly button showing? sure. i wasnt acting or dressing slutty to get guys. who runs around the beach in a parka?? ANYWAYS. my point was people tend to wear what they want because its more comfortable or fits their personality etc..
ive never known anyone to go out of their way to dress a certain way to attract people.. if they dress revealing its likely they do on a daily basis just because..

I still remember my stepdad not allowing me to leave the house in a pair of daisy duke shorts when I was young. He made me go change and he threw them in the trash. I thank him every day for making sure I grew up with a sense of self respect and no desire to look like a hoochie.
