WINSLOW — A 31-year-old woman faces charges that she had a sexual relationship with a young teenager.
The woman, Melissa A. Buxton, of 8 Fortier St., was arrested on a warrant Wednesday night in connection with two Class C charges of sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 16.
A grand jury indicted Buxton on the sexual abuse charges last Friday, according to documents filed at Kennebec County Superior Court in Augusta. She was arrested on a warrant by Winslow police Wednesday night at her home.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but is an indication that there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial in superior court.
The indictment says the offenses involved a boy who was 14 years old, in Winslow, in June and again in early August.
Winslow officer Joshua Veilleux said police involvement started Sept. 17 when he arrived at Fortier Street to find several people screaming and yelling at each other.
"Once we calmed everybody down, that's when we found out why the people were fighting," Veilleux said. "Melissa's husband was suspicious of his wife, and he had come home and the 14-year-old boy was in the house visiting, after the husband had asked that he not be at their home."
That night, Veilleux said, the boy denied the allegations that he was having sex with Buxton.
Buxton, a stay-at-home mother, knew the teenager because her son was friends with him, Veilleux said.
Later, Veilleux, who is also the school resource officer, said he was speaking with the boy at school about another matter when the officer asked again about the allegations involving Buxton, and "he told me the truth."
Veilleux said he and Detective Gina Henderson later met with Buxton, who confessed to having sexual relations with the boy.
After her arrest Wednesday night, Buxton was taken to the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta. Buxton remained at the jail late Thursday afternoon on $1,000 cash bail.
