It's an overall improvement over Windows 7 and the new start screen isn't that big of a deal, actually I prefer it over the start button. The only questionable aspect of the OS is the remarked difference between app and desktop software ecosystems, I think Microsoft should work on it because they are not very coherent and some apps are redundant (two versions of Skype, for example).

It may be good for some users e.g. those with touchscreen displays, but for business users i would give it a definite thumbs down. Being used to using a start button with everything in one place, makes it difficult to switch to another system where moving the mouse to other corners accesses some functions - but not all. Very confusing, hope 8.1 is different.

I prefer windows 7, the 8 feels more redirected to touch screens with all the squares around the desktop, although I've never actually tried it hahaha, i'm just talking based on videos and articles, but I also know it runs smoother on some computers, give it a try...

I used to blame Windows 8 after having writing extensively about all its flaws based on readings but not in personal experience.

However early this week I found myself using Windows 8 due to an emergency case making me unable to use my old computer.

The fact is that I found that Windows 8 is not all what I read nor what I wrote. It's really good, fast and seems reliable. It comes with many things changed and many others that I'm still discovering or needing to find, but basically I can still do what I used to do in the other computer with no incompatibility problems with the old software that I need.

This is an HP Notebook, and it came with a launcher that substitutes with advantage the start button, native of previous Windows Versions.
