So anyone "obtain" the Windows 7 beta or try it out? I've been reading up and people seem to like it. I haven't tried it but the taskbar seems to act too much like the OSx dock and that pisses me the hell off.

I've been waiting for classes to end so that I could install Windows 7 Beta on my computer. I just got it installed yesterday and I like it. It's fairly similar to Vista. It seems to be just as stable as Vista was. I suppose that is based on your experience though. Vista is/was a great operating system with my experience. My biggest gripe was the UAC, but turn that off and you are set.

The task bar no longer labels each program running. It only shows the icon, which is sufficient. The task bar is in a sense more like the OS X dock, but with a twist. It's still the same Windows task bar, only it minimizes programs much in the same way OS X does. This is really a smart move on MS as it might draw some Mac users back to the PC.

Gadgets are no longer stuck to your windows sidebar, however if you want to view your gadgets you must have "show desktop items" selected. That makes it sort of frustrating if you want to view your gadgets but not your icons.

I've only had it on for a day so still playing around with it.

Yes I like it... it has the same sleek vista feel without the extra un-needed widgets, random programs to slow down your comp, and the windows 7 beta and firefox has like super fast internet so its all good. Easy to run small servers off of also, like personal gaming servers and so on...

Ohh gar gar RAWR...

Scared to frak your computer all to shit installing a beta OS on it just to find out you want your old machine back??? xD

Use VMWare to create a virtual session in which you can load windows 7... It basically runs as if you're using remote desktop to get into a "Windows 7 machine" even though the "machine" is really just a file on your computer... Runs pretty fast too, you'd expect it to be glitchy but we run 2 Microsoft server 2003 machines and 1 windows xp machine all at the same time :)

I was saying this for those that wanted to avoid
1. Reformatting their drive
2. Createing a second partition
or 3. those that didn't have a spare harddrive...

Virtual Machines seem to be the best way to go to use a beta OS... my opinion ;)

Quote quote, they sure are even if you do endure a lack of performance on a less powerful setup lol

Its a bit tedious but if u just want a temporary test its best

Only downfall is if you aren't too good with computers you might fuck up the setup of VMWare... But in the same sense if you aren't too good with computers you probably don't care about getting a look at Windows 7 xD

I put it on a virtual box a long while ago. Then I installed it on my second HD so I could try it out with accelerated graphics and look at all the pretty shit it offers. It's not bad.

I've yet to try out the RC. I'd really like to, I wanna see how the built in virtual XP works and if the OS as a whole runs any better on my machine. I had an earlier beta so I'm interested in seeing any improvements.

Used any virus protection? If it's beyond that point why not reformat and reinstall XP?

No time is a good time to use a beta OS as your main machine... Don't do it... You will kick yourself for it if you do...
lol I dont have nothin to save and I already did it... I still have a XP disk and key so it doesnt matter, I could go back at any time...

I guess so but also realise technically you aren't "switching" to any new OS

You are just using a beta... As far as I know they won't be giving you a free copy when the beta test is done...
