I don't think anything about it was particularly anti war. That was nothing compared to the abuses we've known about since the start of the war.

By the way everyone, apparently this year the Afghanistan War became the longest in US history...

Depends when you say US intervention in Vietnam officially began ;) Because even in the late 40's, operations took place to assist the French.

true. It's also whether or not you separate wars based on country or not, I mean, the US has been at war with the middle east since the 50s.

actually the US has kept it's distance pretty well from all that. most of its participation has been as a weapon supplier. prior to desert shield/desert storm, the french and british had much more direct involvement than the US

after getting burned so badly in lebanon with the barracks bombing, american troops were pretty scarce in the region until the desert shield deployment.

Well actually, US presence had been progressively increasing in the Middle East since the 1970's. Before Desert Shield, during the Iran-Iraq war, the United States Navy had a very large force present in the Gulf, and were invovled in several military engagements with the Iranian navy.

The French and British played a negligible role in Middle Eastern affairs (at least militarily) after the Suez War in the 1950's.

that was the navy. they keep a pretty impressive force deployed in the western indian ocean and the mediterranean all the time.

until desert storm, US ground forces were very scarce in the region.

We're not distinguishing between branches here.

My point is that the force present in the Gulf during the 1980's had a more practical and operational purpose than other navy deployments. The United States Navy, as part of Operation Ernest Will, escorted and protected flagged shipping from (namely Iranian) attack. The operations there resulted in several engagements, including one of the largest naval actions since the Second World War, Operation Praying Mantis.

Ernest Will was the start of the United States using its military might to influence events in the region. As such it is something not to overlook. Furthermore, the Iran-Iraq war was a direct precursor to the 1991 Gulf War.
