Why Is Order Such a Key Theme in Theology and Mythology?

Creation stories often begin with chaos and move toward order. Religious laws and rituals also aim to structure life. Why is order so important in sacred narratives? Does this reflect a human need for stability in an uncertain world?

Frankly speaking, I don't see creation stories starting with chaos. For example, in Hinduism, there was sleeping Vishnu, nothing else, then a lotus came out off Vishnu navel on which Brahma came out and started creation. The story starts with nothing and goes on with something, becoming more chaotic.

Order in sacred narratives reflects a desire to make sense of uncertainty. Chaos symbolizes fear, unpredictability, or moral ambiguity, while structure reassures and guides behavior. Myths and rituals offer frameworks for understanding life, showing that humans seek stability and meaning amid disorder.
