So I've been thinking about dishonesty and why people choose to lie. I rarely ever lie. About the only exception I make is for someone's appearance (I'm not in the business of hurting someone's feelings just because I don't feel how they look is attractive). But a lot of people are thrown off by my honesty and they try to come up with ulterior motives for what I say and why I say it. But I simply say what I mean and mean what I say.

Are we all just so dishonest that we can't accept honesty and people at their word and we have to attribute some negative reason for their honesty? And why do you tell lies? Do you think you attribute the reasons why you lie to others?

well, sometimes we don't want to hurt another...other times to avoid confrontation...sometimes we just don't want to hear from another..

i very rarely lie! (little white lies dont count) i refuse to lie to someone when they are seeking the truth, including their appearance! if you think the truth might hurt, dont ask me because i will tell you what i think. People know this about me and its one of the main reasons the like me!

the whole "do unto others as you want done to yourself" comes into play for me. I dont like being lied to, so i wont lie to other people

Why not? Certain things I do aren't anyone elses business. If I have to lie to them so be it. I think the issue with lying is blown out of proportion. This reminds me of that debate we got into about telling children Santa Claus was real LOL. i could see this going that route.

I don't like....I'm just straight talking and tell the truth about things. If that pair of jeans makes your ass look big, I'll say it. Lying makes things worse later on. With the more serious things like cheating and lying about where you were at the time of a crime I think people lie to try and change the consequences, but they usually always get found out, so it means jack shit.

Same here. But I'd rather people just lie and say I look good even when I don't... :24:

I think I respect myself more though because I'm honest. And because I know the people that are close to me know who I really am and they still love me. :D

Why not just be honest and tell them it's not any of their business? They'll respect you more for that than if you lie to them and they find out you lied.

if a situation comes to where i dont want to like, but i dont want to tell the truth either, then i'll work around it and use reverse psychology. "what do you think?" and let that person figure it out on their own and use their own logic.

So the reason why you lie is because you fear the repercussions of the telling the truth?

Honestly, I think you'll find this to be more of the case than with anything else. People like to live in their fantasies, especially when the real world doesn't measure up. Of course in doing so they miss out in the inherited beauty that is the truth of things.

I can't say I have never lied, nor that I won't ever lie again, however I make a great attempt to make sure that what comes from me is truth. I feel physically ill if I am putting in a position to lie. Once one of our friends neglected to bring his girlfriend (also our friend) to a party and instead gave her some bs story. He begged us to keep up the appearance, but when it came to it, I couldn't/Wouldn't.

I have however, held my tongue on things between friends so they could work things out themselves. I'd like to think that most who deal with me get the real me, not some illusion.

Because certain things are none of their business, I guess I could just ignore their questions like a prick or say none of your business :24:

When I lie now, it's to protect. My lies are rare, it kills me with guilt. And I'm bad it unless I truly apply myself.

I am as honest as I can be. If you're buying a car from me, I'll tell you, right up front, what's wrong with it, and what it'll cost to fix it. Then, we negotiate the price from there.

If you want my honest opinion whether those pants make your butt look fat, I'll tell you. However, don't be pissed at me when I tell you that.

However, if you're a known dishonest person, I ain't gonna be straight forward with you, but, neither will I be totally dishonest either.

I own up to my mistakes, but, I don't take the blame for what ain't my fault. Simple as that.

Like Brujah said, I think this is the reason why most people lie about things.

I am honest to a fault and a lousy liar.
Same here. I don't have it in me to lie. If I try I look/feel so guilty that it's fairly obvious I'm not telling the truth so there really isn't any point to me lying.
