I should read more into the fair tax plan. I know its basics, but not enough to really make an educated decision on it.

At first pass, I like it.

The poor will be paying a lot more though, which I know many aren't going to like.

I like the fair tax, from what I've heard. I haven't heard too many of the arguments against it though.

The only argument thatmatters is that the poor will be taxed more, even more than now, and that alone should make it an implausable idea. Tax those who have escalades and BMW's, not those who can hardly afford food.

The poor don't pay taxes now. Only sales. And with tax credits and such, most probably don't even pay that.

Please don't take this as some crazy conservative hating the poor. I'm just saying how it is.

Everybody pays the same percentage sales tax. If you can afford to buy more, you will pay more. The rich will pay a percentage of their $60,000 new BMW's. The poor will pay the same percentage of their $3000 used cars.

You only pay what you can afford.

You cant tax some one more because of what they have. Its like punishment for getting a head in life.

Is it my imagination, or are there a lot more people making sense these days?

It seems like last week when I was ready to give up on the place, and now all these signs of life are popping up everywhere.

Good luck Charlie. You're in for a long drawn out battle, where the other guy WILL have the last word. :willy_nilly: :jk

Ok, so tax the ones who have less thereby making them more financially bankrupt...makes perfect sense.

If you make more, you pay more. It's your debt to the society that made you rich in the first place. Why should I have to pay more than some rich white guy that has several BMW's in his multi-million dollar home? Fuck him, he can dish out some more scratch.

Your anger at tax fairness is totally foundless. The wealthy pay almost all of the taxes in this country, and the poor pay none. Why get so mad?

Was just reading an article in the New York Times that says the wealthiest 1% pay around 38% percent of the taxes.

People under a certain middle to low income pay most of the taxes, the top whateverpercent hardly pay as much.
That is not true at all.

Taxes paid by highest incomes
  • The top 1% pay 22.7% of taxes.
  • The top 10% pay 50% of taxes.
  • The top 20% pay 65.3% of taxes.
  • The top 40% pay 84.3% of taxes.
Taxes paid by lowest incomes
  • The bottom 20% pay 1.1% of taxes.
  • The bottom 40% pay 6.1% of taxes.
Myth - The Rich Don’t Pay Their Fair Share

In 2002 the latest year of available data, the top 5 percent of taxpayers paid more than one-half (53.8 percent) of all individual income taxes, but reported roughly one-third (30.6 percent) of income.

The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid 33.7 percent of all individual income taxes in 2002. This group of taxpayers has paid more than 30 percent of individual income taxes since 1995.
Moreover, since 1990 this group’s tax share has grown faster than their income share.Taxpayers who rank in the top 50 percent of taxpayers by income pay virtually all individual income taxes. In all years since 1990, taxpayers in this group have paid over 94 percent of all individual income taxes. In 2000, 2001, and 2002, this group paid over 96 percent of the total.

That's pure propaganda you're spitting out dude. It's easy to rile people up on this issue because nobody checks their figures.

I dare you to post up some proof on this. ;) You'll be surprised.
