Which phone is better?

I prefer Android over iPhone. It is way more customizable, open-source and overall user friendly. And within the 'Android section' you can choose from many top-leve phones (HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z1, LG G2...) while in the 'Apple section' there is only one, the iPhone 5.

It depends which operating system are you looking for. For IOS, IPhones are great because they're user-friendly and easy to use. I have heard the IPhone 4S is less expensive comparing to the latest IPhones. I would suggest you go to the mobile provider to find out if they still carry the IPhone 4S. For Android OS, both Samsung and Sony Ericsson make great phones. I like Android OS because you can customize the home screen any way you want. I can organize the applications on the screen the way I like.

When talking about Android phones, you can't go wrong with a Nexus, mainly because of the stock Android experience (timely updates, snappier than skinned versions, no bloatware) and the amazing price: the Nexus 4, for example, is a $500 device sold by Google Play devices at $349. The Moto X is also a great Android phone with fantastic customizability.
