Right now money is tight and we are cutting back all extras at my house. Phone is ringing off the wall with charities asking for contributions. When times are good I am selective in my giving and never give to a telemarketer but it is beyond crazy right now.

I too have been receiving an obscene amount of phone calls from charities asking for contributions. I hate to continuously tell them that I'm not interested, but it's hard enough for people to make it on their own these days.

We haven't been getting those kind of calls.

We keep getting mailings asking for money for charities though.. It's easier to say no to the paper ones. I suck on telling people no on the phone.. So when people start to sprout off about stuff I will say my mom and dad aren't home right now..

We actually get people coming to the door sometimes, which is even worse. I used to give to charity but since our outgoings match our incomings right now, we seriously cannot afford to give to others. It feels bad to say no, but it'd feel even worse to get into more debt for someone else's sake.

Generally speaking, I'll always check the charity out if they seem sincere.

First strike is that they're calling. Charities pay companies to call. You donate $20, and $16 dollars of your contribution go to operational costs, such as the charity your giving to paying the company that is calling you.

IMO you always need to research the charity, find out what kind of organization it is, and how much money given is actually used to "help".

For some reason, executives of charitable organizations who make 6 figures easy in salary has always rubbed me the wrong way. I try to give as local as possible.

I don't give money to charity if they have to ask.

I've taught guitar to the mentally ill, worked an afternoon in a charity shop for a year to do my bit, and I don't need to be guilted into giving to a cause.

Also I don't give money to causes that gives education to people in a poor country... I think the thought of educating the child to realize there is no hope for a future, or a job, is a little bit sadistic.. If they are a charity to promote trade and natural economic growth then I'll give.
