I got a text from someone who is a friend I hear from rarely asking me for a friend of mine's cell number. Since I know my friend doesn't give his cell number to just anyone, I text him back I didn't have his cell number. He asked for any number to reach my friend so I gave him his business number.

hmmm..I wouldn't give it out without permission. I once gave out a cell phone number to someone I shouldn't have. The repercussions were awful.

I usually handle such situations in the following way: I tell the asking person that my friend doesn't like to have his number given away, but I offer to give the asking person's number to my friend so that my friend can call this person back.

I usually just say I will have the person get a hold of them. I never give out contact info of my friends to other people unless I have their permission.

I'd never give out someone's number without their permission. I'd have phoned the friend (friend 2) whose number he wanted, told him your friend (friend 1) was wanting his number and give him (friend 2) his (friend 1) number to contact if he (friend 2) wanted to.
Hope that's kind of clear, lol

I was at dinner so I handled it like I did. Had I been unbusy I might have handled it differently.

:homo: yeah, this is what I'd do as well, if I were in your situation

I usually don't give out any information-in this matter a phone number to anyone unless I ask permission from the concerned person. I value the privacy of others in as much as I want them to value mine too :)

There are some people who are very particular about giving out even just a business number. Like for my profession and in cases of Emergency- we hardly entertain business/personal calls. At the facility that I currently work too since I deal with Felons, inmates and stuffs- no personal phone calls allowed. Not even cell phones with camera or recording devices are allowed. It's the rules and we have to abide! I even tell my friends and family not to call me at work unless it's an emergency.

So i think it depends and it's safer to ask the person concerned as that's still 'their information' be it business number or not ;)

i usually say hang on and i'll ask that friend if its ok to give it to you. I'm blunt, put the issue where it needs to go. I would not have given the business number.

I agree with most of the other answers. I do think it was fine to give out his business number. I too have asked if he/she wanted me to give the person they are trying to contact a number they can reach them and/or asked them if they wished their number given out to the inquirer.

Did that convoluted answer make sense? NEED MORE CAFFEINE

I never give out anyone's personal info with checking with them first even a business number. I would call my friend and ask permission to give out any info first.

I talked to my friend this morning. He thanked me for not giving out his cell number or any other personal number. Since he owns his business he was fine with me giving the business number. He was out of town yesterday and just got back in town today.

It'd depend on just how good a friend the other person was and how I was feeling about them at the time.
