What Would Happen If Everyone Became A Vegetarian Or A Vegan?

I believe that animals are just as worthy of life as people. Just because they're not as smart as you and me doesn't mean they should be thought of as less deserving of living a good quality life.

However, if everyone in the world decided to become vegatarians or even vegans, what do you think would happen regarding the animal population?

Hunters claim that the wildlife population would grow too large. But my biology teacher back in high school said the animal population would not because animals killing each other for food would keep the number of animals living in the wild in check. Who do you think is right?

And what would happen to animals who live on farms?

This is a debate I've wrestled with for several years, which is why I ask these questions so I can get the point of views from those who participate on this forum. Thanks.

Many wild animals would starve without hunters. The problem is we've killed off predators of the large game animals. We could reestablish the predator population but which is better. To be run down and mauled by a wolf or to die quickly from a bullet?

There wouldn't be any farm animals without consumers. What good is a cow or chicken if you don't want their milk, eggs or meat? I don't like factory farming because the animals are mistreated. But if the animals are well cared for then I ask which is better. To live and die or to have never lived?

The bottom line is death is a part of life.

So.... it's totally cool and natural for animals to eat other, but when we do it, it's cruel and unusual?

I don't agree with some of the ways animals are farmed, I'd rather that animals were kept in more humane conditions and killed as quickly and painlessly as possible. But I'm not going to stop eating meat.

My sister is a vegetarian, so I do have some experience growing up around that kind of diet. It just does not appeal.

Farm animals won't just disappear if everyone suddenly became Vegetarian. Many Vegetarians (there are so many different types of Vegetarianism) eat honey, dairy and egg products and wear clothes made from wool. All of which require animals.

If everyone decided to deny nature and biology, and chose instead to become vegetarian, there would be great wailing and gnashing of teeth ... from ranchers, butchers, and fast food joints. Then ingenuity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit would find new uses for meat and animal products, possibly processing them into some kind of biodegradable plastic. Butchers would learn how to display collard greens to attract shoppers, and fast food joints would adjust their menus.

Vegetable prices would skyrocket until farmers retooled their corn fields into more diverse crops, then the market would settle back down.

In short, probably not much would change.

I would lose my job.

And there would become a tremendous "underground" market for meat. The word 'prohibition" comes to mind. Hell, I might just become the next Al Capone :p

If everyone quit eating meat, especially beef, the world would be overcome with methane gas and eventually explode when some asshole smoker lit a match. :24:

Animals eat other animals and don't have a guilty conscience why the fuck should we?

Some vegans and vegatarians, if they do eat meat for the first time in years for whatever reason, actually feel like they're going to throw-up soon afterwards.

man is an omnivore, which means he should eat both animal and plant matter, and try telling an eskimo he shouldn't be hunting a walrus or seal but growing crops instead, which would be impossible

I thought their were studies done at some point that showed the worlds population could not be supported by vegies alone.
That there isn't enough soil to support 6.8 billion people...

No way. It takes more veggies to raise meat than that. Maybe you were thinking of that ancient study, "Man shall not live by bread alone." Those findings have probably been debunked by now. ;)
