This past Friday we were told about a mandatory meeting at work this Thursday (the 16th) at 6pm. But that is the same day AND same time that my 2 girls have open house at their school to find out who their teachers are going to be and meet them, etc.
So 2 nights ago (Mon night) I sent my boss (whom I havent even met yet cause she is brand new) an email letting her know that I more than likely would not be attending and why.
I get to work last night and I have a reply back from her. Her response back to me was "I understand the importance of the open house, but this meeting is NOT optional. You need to find a way to juggle the two." What the fucking hell!:mad

That sucks. If they aren't understanding of family life, I'd be looking for another job. You should never have to choose between the two.

:( Im sorry Amy. I agree with AV... I would look for another job. My kids come first, no matter what. She shouldnt ask you to have to juggle the two... maybe someone can fill you in on the meeting later?

It's too bad you already told her why this meeting was in conflict with YOUR LIFE coz you coulda done what lots of folks have to do to get off work to 'juggle' their jobs and LIFE, they call in sick or get sick at work 'n have to leave.

I know that doesn't sound 'ethical' but hey it's the way things are done in the work world coz some folks think work is their life and their real life is just an accessory like a purse or shoes.

Maybe you should see this 'notice' from your new boss as one who is not very flexible when it comes to her personnel and THEIR REAL LIVES and you should find a new job so you can give her 'notice' you'll be leaving.

I would just go to the school and tell your boss you had a flat and could not make the meeting on time. The meeting is just a 'Hello my name is _____ I am very glad to be here and I hope we can all just get along" like you said she is new and has to do the whole boss thing.

What the hell does juggle the two mean? During the breaks for the mandatory meeting you can leave to the open house? then go back between teachers?

What a douchebag.

Pissed me off! Im still pissed about it. My kids come first WAY before my job. It just amazes me that she makes plans to have a meeting at last minute and just expects everyone to drop what they are doing and be there, regardless

Exactly how do you have a full staff mandatory meeting in an ER/triage center anyway? Just one meeting period? I would think there'd be more than one meeting... why not suggest having two meetings, this way people who just got off a 12 hour shift don't have to sit around and listen to the meeting when they're too f'in tired to care about it?

That just sucks. I agree with RecklessTim though, if you do want to keep the job, look for a way around Open House, try to meet with them some other time.

mandatory meetings are just that.. mandatory.. If you dont go, you will probably get fired, so dont think about blowing off the meeting.

Sometimes the school will help out in situations like this. Call them up and see what they can help with.

If you do not learn anything new from this meeting I would beat the piss out of her right there in the ER. At least she'd have somewhere to go, everyone would be at her stupid meeting.

Mandatory meetings are things made by those who don't know what the fuck they are doing. Nothing needs to be mandatory. If you can't pass info around thru email then you have no business being a manager. Lets jump into the 21st century already.

Well, don't look too anxious to leave coz the woman might just ramble on for awhile just to be a you know what.

That meeting lasted almost 2 hrs! Pretty much all it was was a bitchfest. Telling us everything that we need to improve on, satisfication scores, our ability to "not get along" with each other, etc.
I sure could have thought of better things to do than to sit in that meeting. What a waste

We already figured that's what it would be, so did ya make it to the school open house with your kids?

Yeah I left about 10 min early and was pretty much the first ones in the door so we talked to their teachers first and didnt have to wait around. I was pushing it but I made it just in the knick of time to that meeting. I clocked in right at 18:00! Not a minute later
