Well he has to be trained.. you dont have to hit him.. Efficent is subtle punishment for most puppies.

Dogs want to please you, if he Pees, you show him what he did.. tell him he was bad.. use a firm voice.. show him where he should be going..

Be repetative and constant.. he will catch on.

dont hit your puppy for peeing on the floor! that is just wrong! what you need to do is start crate training him. Basically, make him live in his crate, and he needs to be there when you can't actively watch him. He will mess in his crate overnight for a little while, but generally dogs dont shit where they sleep so to speak, so he will learn how to hold it. Take him out every 30 mins to every hour, and everytime you take him out make him ring the bells. Oh yeah you need to buy some bells and hang them from a string to your door (the one he goes through to get outside). For the first week or so you just say "ring the bells!" and kinda ring them yourself for him with your hands, or make him use his nose or paw to ring them. After a week or 2 everytime he needs to potty he iwll ring the bells and let you know. Works like a charm trust me. If you see him squatting on the carpet, immediately pick him up (mid piss if you have to!) and take him to the door and make him ring the bells and take him outside.

#1. Don't let your puppy have access to food and water all day long. They don't need it anytime they want, they're just like us, they can go short periods of time without it. Feeding/watering 3-4 times a day is plenty with puppies older than 8 weeks. A crate is a good way to train .. but letting them pee/poop in the crate just teaches them another bad habit .. you have GOT to take them out each time they are fed/watered to teach them to go outside to potty.

Note: Those puppy pads .. are a BAD IDEA .. that does nothing more than teach them to go potty in your house .. so unless you want to clean up after them for the rest of their lives .. I suggest NOT using those at all. Because you will either have to clean up after them constantly or you'll have to re-train them later .. and it's best to train them once .. the right way.

#2. 10-15 min after your pup finshes his food an/or water take them out to potty. Don't come back in until the dog goes potty. Don't just stand there waiting for them to go either, walk the pup around. Walking helps things move along faster and they will go to the bathroom quicker.

Note: this may take more/less than 10-15 min. The 10-15 min rule is just a base to work off of. Some dogs take longer, some don't need that long. Wait 10-15 min, go outside, and keep track of how long you've been outside .. so that the next time you feed/water you'll know if you need to wait a little longer to go outside or go sooner.
Dogs would much rather do their business in grass than your floor .. but they will go when it hits them (as puppies) as they cannot hold it (just like a baby except a puppy doesn't have the comfort of being able to wear diapers) .. so never hit your dog and don't rub their nose in it .. because it's YOUR fault if they wet/poop your floor .. not theirs! You are in control of the situation not them .. they are at your mercy.

#3. Praise your dog when they go to the bathroom outside (a small portion of a treat works, but petting and belly rubbing works even better). Also, try to go to the same area each time you take them out. Their scent will linger and it will help trigger a response to go sooner/quicker. Dogs respond to positive reinforcement as opposed to negative. All negative does with dogs is teach them to fear you .. and you do NOT want a fearful dog. Once a dog learns to fear you and not respect you (dont' ever confuse the 2) you can develope a bigger problem. Fearful dogs can easily turn into biters or destructive (spiteful). As a dog cannot tell you to stop .. instead, they will learn to use their teeth to get their point across.

#4. Watch your pup and see how many times they go. Some dogs go once, wait 5 min and go again . so don't rush right back in after they go once. Wait a bit and see if they go again, or they will go in the house (again, they can't really help it .. you are actually training their bladder during this process .. not just them!).

#5. This is also a good time to leash train your pup. So you can kill 2 birds with one stone :D.

Hope this helps :)

um... no...

Start taking him out more and giving him treats for doing his business outside.

If you repeatedly hit a dog for peeing on the floor, or after seeing that he'd peed while you were gone. he's just going to equate you with being hit, and that's not a dog-owner relationship. he'll be scared of you until the day he dies.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT is the only way.

Take him out more, treat him for going out, clean up any messes he makes inside.

Doing this helped my brother/sisterinlaw with their dog a lot.

i didnt say hit...i said rub his nose in it and let him know he did something bad

He's not going to equate having his nose rubbed in his shit as having done anything wrong. Dogs don't have the reasoning and ability to comprehend the way we do. He's just going to know that he's having his face rubbed into his waste.

Positive reinforcement is the way to teach a dog right from wrong.

A dog is even worse than a toddler .. they basically have an attention span of about 1 minute.

Once they stop doing something it's pretty much forgotten unless they see it again (which is why they will seem so happy to see you if you walk out of the room, stay out for a few minutes, and walk back in).

Rubbing their nose in thier waste does nothing but make them fear you. They think you are being mean to them for no reason .. they have NO clue at all why you're doing it.

I've raised 10 litters of puppies and house/leash trained them all before I sold them .. I've tried several methods .. and none work nearly as well as the ones I've mentioned. They wil leave you with a dog that minds and doesn't have a tendency to do spiteful things because you've taught it to defend itself from you. :)
