What Harm Does Swearing Do?

I have a 3 and a 5 year old. I swear a bit. My kids hear swear words from time to time. From me when i hurt myself, the local bums swearing and carrying on in the street, on the telly. It's impossible to completely avoid swearing.
As a parent i think that my children being introduced to swearing is a positive thing. They know and understand 'naughty words' and are completely aware that it is not acceptable for them to repeat them. Sure they have over time. My son called me a bugger. Not the worst word but still... it's a no no word.

Interestingly. The government has recently given the Victoria Police the ability to give on the spot $240 fines for swearing in a public place. Obviously not the 'oh shit i missed the train' kind of swearing but the loud drunken ranting of teenagers etc. I think this is a great idea. Sure swearing is definitely part of everyday language and as i said before i am guilty of using it myself, far more than i should but in my opinion the overuse of swearing does nothing more than make me question your intelligence. If you are incapable of expressing yourself without the use of a swear word. You lack the basic vocabulary taught in school. If you choose to swear instead of using a non offensive word then I question your respect for other people and also how highly you value yourself.

So what harm does swearing do. To kids, not much if they have diligent parents who teach them from the beginning what it means and why it's taboo. Might be nice if my kids didn't have to hear quite so much though.
From your own mouths. It makes you sound like a potty mouth with no respect for the people around you or yourself. It lowers your intelligence and is a huge turn off for a lot of people.

Nothing worse or more embarrassing than hearing or having your five year old curse in public. I would say shit when something went wrong and eventually my little one would repeat it. And funny thing is.... use it in the same manner. Made me smile.... but it also made me stop saying shit.... and I explained to the little one why they shouldn't use such language.

But I agree with the ones who say it revolves around being disrespectful.

I never swear in public. I suppose if I'd have gotten mad enough I might. But generally, I avoid situations where others might piss me off. :)

I definitely swear a lot, I don't even realize it but I have my whole life. When I was 11, my friend and I would swear the alphabet in class to keep us busy.

So ladylike.

That's awesome... I'm so gonna play that later :D

I don’t think swearing is that bad in-terms of “that goal was so fucking awesome dude” It’s how you use it to a degree... Also where you’re from, where you’re at... You gotta adjust accordingly. I would never swear in front of kids.
Swearing become instinct to emotion... A bad habit... But its not like im hanging around with a bunch of nuns so who gives a fuck.

Try going to a job interview and curse
Try having a managerial role and curse at your subordinates
Try implementing change within an organization dealing with people by cursing at them
Try dealing with the general public and curse at them

Is cursing harmful? Probably not immediately to the person doing the cursing.

Then again, don't want a blanket party, don't pick the tighty whitey's and you better be able to lay out some curse words from time to time in your immediate social setting around your piers. Are you in custody of the state? Better be able to throw down on a moments notice unless you don't want to become the prey.

I'm guessing cursing is nothing more than a learned behavior. Other than school, where is a child most likely going to spend most of their time?

I'd also guess that cursing to some extent is nothing more than a rite of passage for most adolescents. Hopefully it's one that they will out grow. From personal experience, cursing will generally do nothing to enhance your career.

I would never swear in front of kids.
And neither would I (unless I'm trying to make a point LOL), but why? If you use obscene language on the internet where you know "kids" may frequent, aren't you "swearing in front of kids"?

I'd guess for some, swearing could be a release of anger, but for others, it's as previously mentioned, nothing more than a learned habit. But (a conjunction I know) as others have pointed out here, to some extent, cursing is a form of disrespect. Why would you disrespect others you don't know by cursing?

And yes, even I, the sheltered one, even curse from time to time. However, as you get older, hopefully you learn there is a time and place for everything.

Joe, I'm not entirely sure what your point is. That no one should ever swear?

Pretty much everyone seems to agree that it's important to be aware when swearing is appropriate and when it's not. What more do you want?

.

The first two frequently happen and every successful business man that I've heard of swears at their staff.
Your third point is irrelevant which you would have noticed if you had actually taken the time to read the OP because I said that swearing directed at people is rude and I'm talking about swearing in general. If I was in a shop and the checkout person said shit or fuck as part of the general conversation, I wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.

Part of my point is lead by example.

As far as being appropriate, perhaps I'm the odd man out in thinking that a general forum that anyone of any age can join should monitor the language used.

I think this is the case for this forum. Children don't post here often that we know of, and the one younger poster who just joined has parents as members, so if there was a problem I doubt they would let her join, and they haven't made a thread requesting we cease all swearing.

Well that means every forum all over the internet needs to be censored, according to your opinion. Unfortunately, the site owners and administrators can't photo ID every person that joins any site. All they can do is ask you to be honest about your DOB when joining.
