And especially how does it hurt children if they hear it? Thought this deserved a thread of it's own, leading on from a thread in the general section.
Obviously it's disrespectful if you're calling someone directly a cunt ect but how does it hurt anyone using it in general language.
Saying "I've had a shit day" or "don't post a fucking picture". How does that hurt anyone? Or what damage can it do if children read it?
Fucked if I know! lol! :D

It teaches kids the words and they will repeat it. It's taboo to hear kids swearing and looks like bad parenting :p
Right or wrong, I won't battle that one out :24:

I definitely swear a lot, I don't even realize it but I have my whole life. When I was 11, my friend and I would swear the alphabet in class to keep us busy.

So ladylike.

Words are words and it all comes down to how they are used.

You can tell someone off, offend them and generally be an ass without using swear words...

Words are just that words.........

I find it ugly when anyone, adult or child is constantly spouting out swear words. I think if a child is around people that are swearing a lot they are going to adapt that behaviour and swear all the time too. Which I don't think is right.

Is it harmful for a child to hear some swear words every now and again? Absolutely not, thats ridiculous.

It leads to them getting an infraction if they join here and call someone a fucking cunt.

Seriously, I have no problem with general swearing. Yes if the kid calls another kid a twat in the playground (when they are 6) then there's a problem. But if he goes "That was a fucking good lesson today" it's just a form of expression. Swearing is taboo these days, even still. It's a disgrace. Swearing should be taught on the curriculum.

I will admit, when I'm at a store and someone is well...swearing the alphabet, I want to punch them. Ugly is a good word for it. I only swear in text (hey, forums are fair game) and at home.

I think around the little ones, it should be used minimally, mostly if they aren't yours. Once they become teens, unless they ASK you not to use "foul" language around them, what is the problem? I cuss like a fuckin' sailor. I really don't give a shit either. If an adult has a problem with it, they can take it up with me. Fuck being politically correct and lady like or whatever having a clean vocabulary makes you. I keep things colorful.

This is what I find it always comes down to when people say you shouldn't swear in front of kids. Nothing harmful, just personal taste. I don't like seeing people wearing socks with sandals but it's no reason to say you shouldn't wear it in front of children, lol.

I'm not sure if I'm going to word this properly but frankly, it's vulgar. I swear, but I don't swear in front of my parents, because I respect them - I also hardly ever swear in front of my boss. Swear words, whilst a form of expression, are a vulgar one, and a little common.

To expand on the respect side of things, you don't find lawyers swearing in court rooms or teachers swearing in parent-teacher meetings, and so on. It's not professional. It's a very casual way of expressing yourself. Teaching your kids that it's fine to swear all the time, in front of anyone, is only going to make them look disrespectful and vulgar to other people. I want my kids to be polite, I'd like to think I could take them anywhere and not have to worry about what they might blurt out.

I don't think it "harms" anyone, it's just disrespectful.

I look at it this way... I don't swear in front of my kids or will allow them to swear. Not because it's wrong or will hurt anyone, but because I see it as being disrespectful. On the same hand, I wouldn't allow my children to backtalk or be disrespectful, again, not because it's harmful but out respect.

As a parent, I want to teach my kids to say thank you, please, not talk over your conversation, etc. Swearing falls right into this same category for me... :dunno
I just feel that kids that are respectful at an early age tend to carry that with them throughout life...

I agree with both these posts and couldn't have said it any better.

Just because you don't allow them to use it doesn't mean they won't.

Oh, I agree. Like I said, I've never sworn in front of my parents and never will. They never allowed it. I still know all the words and use them though. It's not about trying to stop them ever swearing because realistically, of course they will.

What I think is important is that they understand why it's okay to swear when you're having a laugh with your friends, but not when you're talking to a teacher, or your grandparents, and so on. It's about knowing what is appropriate and respectful.

I can agree with this. I find myself slipping in front of my nieces and nephews and have to correct myself. They know it's wrong to swear.

Oh definitely. I never use them in front of my parents, and my son will see that as he gets older and better able to understand. But they're regular vocabulary when I'm driving and talking to certain people lol.

I remember one friend's mom allowed her to use a few choice words, rather than the whole rainbow of smut lol. I think it was hell and damn. That would be something that I would do with my son, allow him to use swear words in the right settings, but not the really vulgar ones (fuck, cunt, shit, etc) Those are more derogatory than hell, damn, or bitch, IMO.

is just words, and sometimes these words are used when control slips away, that is more the issue not the words but the lack of self control, which could lead to anger management issues
