Not that emo doesn't mean emotional or anything, but it was originally short term for emotional hardcore, which was a form of punk. So, the original meaning of saying you're emo would mean you belong to a certain punk scene, which was damn good, btw.

But yeah, like all genres, it changes... bands take it in different directions and the meaning changes. For better or for worse. Though quite a few of these teenage boys/girls listen to music that's like the third wave, and really it's closer to pop-rock.

Interestingly enough, Guy Picciotto, who's a founder of the emo genre (with Rites of Spring) shares your view.

I don't recognize that attribution. I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm not really trying to make a point here, I just feel the need to say that in case someone doesn't know.
