Yup, that's true. The Afrikaans language grew out of Dutch.

If the Dutch (and to some extent Germans) speak slowly and clearly we Afrikaans folks can understand about 80 - 90% of what they're saying.

The're all dead now but on my mums side it was Nanny Rose and Granddad Jock and on my dads side it was Nanny Iris and Cunt. One of my Great - nans on my dads side was alive until I was about 4 or 5 and for some reason we called her by her last name, Nanny Greer.

I never new my grandfathers and one grandmother but I would refer to them as grandpa and grandma I guess. One of my grandmothers liked to be called granny, she was southern lol.
