Why is it called a wife beater?

I see nobody answered this...they are called wife-beaters b/c every frigging time you watch an episode of COPS the guy that they lock up for beating the shit out of his wife is always wearing it. Seriously, that's where it comes from.

The nickname wifebeater originates from its association with aggressive, underclass males, usually living in poor conditions, such as a dilapidated trailer, especially as frequently depicted in television shows and movies.

Oh, and I'm wearing camo capris and a beige babydoll tunic.

Really? I thought the name was around long before that.

I think the definition you quoted is not the same for the type of wear tho. It seems as tho that definition was more so with regard to people who actually beat their wives, but from that part of culture.

It mentions "aggressive" too, though. COPs has been on the air since 1989, though...so it's been around quite a while.
