WordPress is probably one of the best inventions to ever grace the internet. It's very useful for web developers especially those who don't know anything about codes and stuff. I currently am maintaining a website using WordPress and I want to customize it even further. I know that plugins are the way to go in order to further customize my site. What plugins for WordPress would you recommend?

+1 to that! I assume you are using WordPress.org and hosting your own website. The plugin I found to be the most useful is Ultimate TinyMCE (adds a MS Word style bar to the editor). However, it is not compatible with the latest release (3.9) so only use it with the older version. The coder replaced it with WP Edit (3.9 compatible) but I haven't had a chance to evaluate it yet.

Here are some others that I recommend, but you may not need them depending on your site.
  • Oomph clone widgets
  • Media file manager advanced
  • Contact form 7
  • BackUpWordPress
  • amr shortcode any widget
  • Duplicate Post

I like to use these:
  • EWWW Image Optimizer - Reduce file sizes for images within WordPress including NextGEN Gallery and GRAND FlAGallery. Uses jpegtran, optipng/pngout, and gifsicle.
  • W3 Total Cache - Easy Web Performance Optimization (WPO) using caching: browser, page, object, database, minify and content delivery network support.
  • WordPress SEO - Improve your WordPress SEO: Write better content and have a fully optimized WordPress site using the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast.
  • Disqus Comment System - The Disqus comment system replaces your WordPress comment system with your comments hosted and powered by Disqus.
  • JetPack by Wordpress - Supercharge your WordPress site with powerful features previously only available to WordPress.com users.
  • Akismet - Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not.

There are plugins in fact that every WordPress installation should install, but it is by type. By example, a caching plugin, a SEO plugin and a backup plugin. Then, you can search for best plugin according to the way you want to use your WordPress installation. With plugins, WordPress can be turned into anything!

It depends on what kind of wordpress website you are trying to build. If you want your wordpress site to function as an online store, you can use woocommerce. If you want to create digital download store, try easy digital downloads.
