I'm sure that this is a topic has been tossed around by many of us. Should marijuana be legalized? I, personally, do not understand why it's against the law to smoke it.

Some believe it's not legal because the government can't make money off of it because anyone can grow it. I don't know about that one because not everyone can even keep a house plant alive :)

Anyway....what are your thoughts?

I think it should be legalized. You can always tell an old toker because they're slower in the head than normal, so I think there is truth to it being bad for you. I'm not sure about the health affects of marijuana vs tobacco or alcohol, but I doubt it would to much worse.

As far as the ease of growing your own, I think the tobacco industry has proved that people won't go through the trouble. In my past life I've been around a lot of drugs. I haven't done a lot, but I've seen it. Some drugs end lives, and all drugs are a drain, but I've never seen weed end a productive life.

I DO feel that it is a gateway drug. Hands down because I've seen it a hundred times. I think if it were legal, and regulated, kids wouldn't feel the need to do the other (worse) drugs, and they wouldn't become desensitized to breaking the law with the weed. Similar to the reasoning that smoking cigarettes doesn't encourage a drastic increase in drug use.

Driving under the influence, or going to work under the influence should be jail and firing offenses though. If I won't tolerate a drunk on the roads or in the office, I'm sure as heck not going to tolerate somebody being high.

There's no doubt it affects your brain over a long period of time, but then so does just being alive lol

I personally have no qualms with it being legalised, but only on the basis that tobacco and alcohol are far more potent threats to our health and they are deemed acceptable by scoiety.

It's legal in Canberra to have a maximum of 2 plants(at your place of residence) in Canberra for personal use only..

You aren't allowed to buy or sell.. They sell bongs by the load here lol!!

The laws are really contradictory.. It's rather confusing

I would say in my case if it was legalised I would do it more.

Weed for me is something I have only very occasionly, and more often that not, never with a group of people because then they just sit around grunting & each saying how stoned they are.. BORING! :24:

If it was legalised I'd probably take it up more often as I wouldn't have to go running around finding a dealer with friends who just want to sit on a couch and laugh for 5 fucking hours.

Ah but you would get bored of it being that it would be so readily available no?

It would be like running down to the local 7eleven to grab yourself a gram

I'd only get it occasionly because it's really not my thing, I'm an introverted person by nature so I prefer drugs that make me extroverted :)

But for the rare occasions I would fancy a quiet joint by myself it's nice to know I could go quickly down to wherever and get some without hassle or inconveniance.

Not only do I favor the legalization of the green, I favor legalization of all illicit drugs.

In addition to the financial benefits of taxation, distribution, etc., legalizing illicit street drugs in the US would significantly reduce gun violence and the prevalence of street gangs overnight.

As far as the gov't not being able to make money because everyone would grow their own, I doubt it. Do farmers have trouble selling vegetables because everyone grows their own? Or what about tobacco? How many smokers do you know that grow their own tobacco?

Good point.

We live in a society where we will pay someone to do anything no matter how trivial.

Yup! Alcohol tax pays for the NHS three times over, imagine how much richer we could be with legalised drugs and counting the amount of money we would save on prosecuting dealers and users.

Interestingly people in the governemnt always discount the old claim that smokers more than pay for their own NHS bills through the years of tax they give while buying tobacco products - but I 've never seen any evidance given to the contrary.

So long as it is taxed
So long as it is regulated

I see few problems with it being legalized. The majorproblem i see with this happening, is that the same monopoly and industry issues as there is with tobacco. Companies trying tolure younger kids, not disclosing the full risks with smoking it ( yes i know most peple know the risks, but most people isnt everyone).

Tobacco is just as bad, its just that as a society we have been desensitized from it, and lets not get into alcohol! thats far worse of an addiction than someone wanting marijuana, yes because it is regulated and taxed (like cigarrettes) we are all ok with them.
