VoIP: Voice Over Internet Protocol

oh yes.. also forgot - the target of the voip phone call has to have their computer running, if its through their computer. and if you use voip exclusively, you are screwed in a bad storm...

This is not new. Time Warner has been offering this for years. Its a normal telephone, you don't need a computer for this. I started my programming life out at Nortel writing tons of embedded code for this, which was way back in 1999.

The storm would have to be bad enough to knock out the power. All cable lines are buried nowadays. Besides, thats what cell phones are for. :)

What are you talking about, of course you need pc for voip, it means VOICE OVER IP which means you need ip address which you get when you connect to internet.

Oh yeah? My phone works flawlessly, yet it is plugged into nothing but the phone jack. No smoke and mirrors and no hidden computer. Just the modem that was mentioned and contrary to popular belief, this is not a pc.
