Using a separate flash?

I have a Canon 1000D, and my dad dropped by yesterday and gave me a Miranda 630CD flash, which he's had lying about for some time.

We don't have the instructions for it, and googling hasn't been much help - I can connect it to the camera but nothing happens when I do, and I have no idea how to make the camera look for the flash. Any ideas? I'm not 100% that they're even compatible.

Also, if they're not, is there any way to use it off camera?

Yep, 2 x AA's, I can test fire the flash when it's not on the camera so I know they're working.

I pretty much just expunged my entire working knowledge of external camera flashes. And even then, it was a bit of a guess that they took batteries

If there is a sync connection on the cam and on the flash you can use it without batteries and it wil be powered by the cam by using a sync cable.

With one of these, yes...I can't find anything on whether it is compatible with Canon cameras on shoe. You would have to go with a wireless trigger. A word of warning, it will only be manual flash and not E-TTL.

The Miranda 630D maybe wired differently for Noinks or other camera, unless he used a Canon
