Unemployment

I don't know where else to put this, sorry if this is wrong :)

Today is my last day of work. In about 2 hours I'll officially have been made redundant.

It's not really sunk in yet, but I've started getting waves of anxiety. We found out just before Xmas, possibly the worst time ever to be looking for a job, and I've not got annything to go to yet. Added to that, my boyfriend is an agency driver and is lucky to get 3 days work a week at the moment, so we are both looking for new jobs.

I just wanted to talk about it, because it's overwhelming. I've not been out of work, ever. I started in a Saturday job at 16 and was constantly in full time work since I left school. I'm not sure what to do with myself!

Presumably you'll get redundancy pay. Try and make that last as long as you can (I know, different circumstances for different people) and just keep trying to look for jobs. Another way is just to ring companies up asking about vacancies or writing to them. But never give up.

I do get redundancy, although it works out to be about the equivalent of a months worth of pay, so it won't last much longer than a normal pay packet would.

Thanks for the tip, I've tried ringing round a few companies and not had much luck so far but things are just starting to pick up the christmas lull, so I'll keep trying :)

What are your job skills?

I'm a receptionist, which mainly requires the ability to type and look down on others simultaneously.

But seriously, this job was at a dental reception so I'm slightly 'specialised'. Plus dentistry has a high turnover and is a small world, which I have a good reputation in so far, so hopefully that might help.

Aside from that, I've taken courses in computer skills, and I've been in customer service since I was a teenager so that's one area I'm used to.

I'm out of a job, right now, unemployed for the first time and it still doesn't feel real! I could kill my co-worker, who spent all today talking about sick she feels about having to start a new job. Hell, I'll have your job if you're so damn worried about it.
