Many people want to help others going through a difficult time in their lives. And they have the best intentions.

However, I must stress to anyone trying to make a difference in the lives of others that it's a bad idea to try to be like a therapist. You have to be educated enough to know that you're not educated enough to play therapist (unless you actually are a full-fledged therapist, of course).

For example, I had a friend of mine who new a teenage girl who had an eating disorder. My friend told me that he wanted to help her by giving her some advice about how to combat her disorder.

I told him that was a bad idea. The thing is, if you're working with someone with an eating disorder, you have to know what to say and when to say it. I told him he'd be in over his head if he tried to play therapist.

So for anyone who wants to help others, go for it. But know your limitations.
