So got the beers in CB?:D Going to be a late one over here, kick off is about 10:30 pm or something. Cant believe Beckham has been made captain for this, totally pointless. Hope to see some new blood after several players rested. Hopefully Dean Ashton will make his debut. I'll be pissed off it he sticks with Crouch and Defoe though I'm guessing CB will want to see Crouch at some point for a bit of revenge!:D

I do believe even Beckham starting is a joke when we should be playing younger players which will be there in the future.

I have no problem with Beckham in the squad and even though he's lost pace, he never was very pacy and it's good to have him there for the younger players coming through. Pointless playing him in a friendly though, we should be using these to try new things and players.

I just seen this Pete. Yup, got some stash of beers in waiting. Kick off time for us is 5.30 PM which is just right. The stadium has been sold out ever since the match was advertised for ticket sales via the internet some weeks ago. A group of us are going to lime (hang out) at one of our houses and take in the match on big screen TV. Eats, drinks, the works. Good times.

Soooooo....the ole Beckham in the line up eh? That's cool. Looking forward to seeing him. He's still got the skills.
As for that miscreant Crouch...:mad... :D, sure I would love to see him take the field. Should be a good match nonetheless. I gather most of the country will be taking in the match and if I know our people like I do there'll be partying going on in the main street of St James (the city that never sleeps) after the match regardless of the outcome. That main street is lined with bars/pubs and goes round the clock 24/7 and anytime day or night you can get anything to eat and/or drink. That's why we call it the city that never sleeps. There's always a celebration there after things like this.

Gonna be a good lime (local parlance for hanging out, partying etc)

I should be leaving home around half fourish or so.

Have fun, sounds like a great place to be with that enthusiasm for just a friendly! I'll just be watching it at home, would be very hard to find a bar showing it and that late on a Sunday night anyway.:(

***Today's local news***

Warriors, English in grudge match

TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Soca Warriors footballers play England today in a return of their epic 2006 World Cup clash in Nuremburg, Germany.

The match has been organised by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation to celebrate their 100th anniversary and is dubbed “A Score To Settle.”

Already the more than 23,000-seat Hasely Crawford Stadium at Mucurapo has been sold out and the accompanying promotional hype surrounding the star-studded England team has gripped the local fans.

And quite apart from the action on the field with pride at stake for both sides, the only second encounter between the former colonial masters and their crown colony has also been described as one of the most politically charged in recent memory.

Reports out of England claim that the English FA has agreed to the match because they hope to woo the support of FIFA vice-president Jack Warner for their 2018 World Cup bid.

They see the controversial Trinidadian, a leading opposition Parliamentarian, as central to their success since he controls a powerful block of votes as head of CONCACAF, the hemispheric football organisation. However, politics aside, Trinidad and Tobago, captained in this match by attacking midfielder Aurtis Whitley, have high expectations of reversing the 2-0 defeat they suffered two years ago.

Coach of the Soca Warriors, former Colombian defender Francisco Maturana has resisted the urge to grant sentimental cameos for the most celebrated footballer in local history, striker Dwight Yorke, and midfielder Russell Latapy, nicknamed “The Little Master” who both played a major role in the team’s qualification for the World Cup, the first in their country’s history.

Instead he has opted for a blend of several promising locally based players with their more experienced counterparts who ply their trade overseas.

They are among a squad of 18 players named for the match against England and the opening fixture of the CONCACAF qualifiers for 2010 World Cup campaign against Bermuda on June 15 at home.

The youngsters bidding to become the backbone of the team include Jamal Gay, Akeem Adams, Kareem Smith and Keon Daniel.

The England based professionals who are available include Trinidad and Tobago’s leading goalscorer Stern John, striker Kenwyne Jones though nursing a wrist injury, defender Dennis Lawrence and midfielder Carlos Edwards.

Since Dutchman Wim Rijsbergen, who took over from his countryman Leo Beenhakker after the World Cup, parted ways with the TTFF last year, Maturana has an enviable unbeaten streak with the Soca Warriors– winning three and drawing two matches on the trot.

Maturana hopes that the Soca Warriors can clinch their second straight berth at the World Cup this time in South Africa 2010.

The most recent victories were against Barbados, Jamaica and El Salvador and he is looking for another impressive note on his CV, a win against England.

The hopes of an unlikely upset by the home side have been fuelled by the fact that England’s Italian coach, Fabio Capello, has rested seven key players from his squad which defeated the US 2-0 in a friendly international on Wednesday at Wembley in London.

Missing are Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, Owen Hargreaves, Wes Brown and Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Ashley Cole and John Terry.

But judging from the rapturous welcome football fans gave the young England outfit who attended their first training session on Friday, the stars would hardly be missed.

Getting the biggest cheers and most of the adulation was David Beckham, the former Manchester United star who plays for the LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer.

We are party animals Pete. Anything for a party. he he :D

Your guys got a warm welcome from us. It's all good. We love the English. Almost all of our professionals play in the English league as you may have seen in the above article I posted.

I would have loved to have seen Yorke and Latapy take the field if even briefly but alas it's not going to happen. We're giving our younger players a chance as well. We don't want to take to much advantage on ya'll. :D :)jk)

One more bit of news:

Beckham stars at Macoya
By STEPHON NICHOLAS Sunday, June 1 2008

HUNDREDS of enthusiastic football fans turned up at the Marin Lee Stadium in Macoya on Friday to witness a coaching clinic featuring several members of the Trinidad and Tobago and England national teams.

They utilised every vantage point to get a closer look of the English players as well as take pictures of their football heroes on the artificial turf.

David Beckham of the LA Galaxy will win his 102nd cap when he takes the field today at the Hasely Crawford Stadium for the Centennial match against TT dubbed “A Score to Settle.”

The MLS player who is the world’s highest paid footballer and is known worldwide for his expert freekicks and precise long passes was named yesterday as captain of the team for the one-off friendly international.

He emerged as the main attraction of the team since they arrived on Thursday evening for football-hungry spectators and received cheers with each touch of the ball on Friday.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who scored a long-range effort against TT in the 2006 World Cup in Germany to seal a 2-0 win gained minor applause as well as Manchester United central defender Rio Ferdinand and Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.

The trio gave the spectators and children a display of their skills juggling the ball and also posed for photographs.

TT captain Aurtis Whitley and the Sunderland FC pair of Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards were some of the local players present signing autographs as well participating in small scrimmages with the children selected for the clinic.

Well a pretty good game from an England point of view, should have got more than 3 goals though. Good to see Ashton finally make his debut, pretty good half for him but he should have put that chance away! T and T's defense was pretty shocking.

Agreed. England had better ball control and created more opportunities.
Those two early goals put a damper on things. England deserved to win in any case.

Those drums are what add flava. We love the drumming. Ain't the same without it.

Yeah, Dwight's our boy. Very well revered over here. Pity he's near the end of his carreer. Well at least he's retired from international matches. He just made a small appearance as a favour to Jack Warner I presume.
