I just got done chatting with HP and I finally got an answer to the Vista/Warranty question. Turns out I can ditch that shit and put on XP. Questions though, mainly one. I've got 64 bit Vista and I'm having a hard time finding a copy of 64 XP. I've also heard (never used XP64) that compatibility with 32 bit stuff is shit. So the main question is how much of a performance hit am I taking with 32 compaired to 64. I've got 4gb of RAM and I know I'm taking a .5 (or so) hit on the memory. My other question is about my HD. I've got SATA and I've read that this can be a problem in XP. My specific model is a Pavilion DV9700t. Thanks in advance.

Hey baby. I used 64bit for a while, then nick sat on my cd and all I have is the key left. Anyway, I ran into a ton of compatibility issues with apps, CSS hacks never worked. I had to find 64bit drivers for everything and had to use a beta version of 64bit avg.

Personally just go with 32bit pro.

Have you considered using Linux? I switched to it from XP a year and a half ago. It works really well for me. Not only that, all the software I need to use is free. Legally free!

I used Linux on my desktop for quite some time, I enjoyed it. I use my laptop for school though and I really need MS Office, the professors are pretty strict about formatting plus I use PowerPoint a lot. I also like playing games and Wine doesn't cut it for me.

So, HP sold you a pc with Vista on it .. Vista is fucking up .. they tell you to swap to XP, then say "good luck with that" and send you on your way?

Lame Sauce @ HP!

FYI: if you downloaded (on purpose or inadvertantly) the SP1 for Vista .. uninstall it. Yes you will be at a greater risk for whatever the SP was supposed to update .. but Vista runs better without it.

I bought a laptop with Vista (because it's all that's offered anymore) and I installed XP by choice. HP actually "didn't recommend it" but didn't care if I did it. And I had Vista with SP1, got rid of it, and my computer ran like utter shit. Also, to whoever offered OSx, I'm straight, sorry.

Well dude, I just finished downgrading from Vista to an old XP professional 32 bit. The two major hurdles I had were:

1) Old XP does not recognize SATA drives. You need third party drivers on a floppy to install at the beginning of the XP installation process.

2) XP will not recognize drives formatted with Vista. I had to do a LLF to get rid of the Vista formatting.

There are more details but the process is not as easy as the old format C:/ boot with installation disc method.

I am now running 32 bit XP on this dual core rig and so far so good

i have an older model Compaq Presario (sr1300nx) and have been running xp on it. I've run Linux (multiple distros) on it, and i've run vista on it. I still like, actually love, xp. it always runs great. my wife has a new compaq something-or-other model with vista installed. I hate it! I refuse to use her comp.

I also refuse to Vista, until it proves to be better than XP, no thanks.
