tiger escapes zoo

I don't understand anybody who's upset that they shot the tiger. It was about to maul somebody. The cops probably didn't have time to go get a tranquilzer gun. And it's not like they were gonna Taze it.

If it was a person about to kill someone, they would've shot the person. Protecting the life of the victim is their #1 priority.

I agree and disagree with your statement, mostly because I'm trying to build up my post count:

I agree that they had to shoot it immediately...it did maul 3 people, one of which died on the scene.

But it is sad that such a magnificient animal had to be killed...or had to be put in that situation in the first place. But such is life.....

What happened was, and this is all very preliminary, that 3 boys, all mid to late teens, might have been taunting the tiger. Appearantly the tiger pen's outer wall was only about 12 ft. high, and the AZA recommends 14.5 ft...or something to that effect.

It had been checked over and passed safe by health and safety though.;)

I have no problems with zoos in general but where every effort is made to keep the animals happy. I hate Chessington zoo, who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to share a zoo with a theme park???:(

Oh, it was checked, but appearantly the tiger area was mis-measured by this independant certification group...it's not that the zoo needed their blessing, but here in the States, as I think it is in the UK, if you're certified by some sor t of "Independant" entity, people are all like "ooh, he's certified independantly, he must really have his shit together..."

Or something to that effect.

While I agree that killing that magnificient creature was a travesty, as a parent, I can only hope that the policemen that shot the tiger were acting out of self-defense and in the best interests of the public. They weren't dealing with a rogue pit bull or something, they were face to face with the largest cat in the world. I'm sure if the tiger could have been corralled or at least contained while animal control or a zoo keeper retrieved a tranquilizer gun, that's what they would have preferred. Just a sad event.

I have a feeling of certainty that when an animal of any variety kills a human, for whatever reason, it is immediently put down. :(
