Tiger Escapes From San Francisco Zoo Cage, Killing 1, Injuring 2
Wednesday, December 26, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO — A tiger that mauled a zookeeper last year escaped from its pen at the San Francisco Zoo on Tuesday, killing one man and injuring two others before police shot it dead, authorities said.

The three men were in their 20s; they were together and were not zoo employees, San Francisco Police spokesman Steve Mannina said. They were attacked just after the 5 p.m. closing time, on the east end of the 125-acre grounds.

They suffered "pretty aggressive bite marks," Mannina said.

It was unclear how the tiger escaped or how long it was on the loose. The approximately 300-pound female Siberian tiger, named Tatiana, attacked a zookeeper last December during a public feeding, according to the zoo's director of animal care and conservation.

Robert Jenkins, the zoo's director of animal care and conservation, could not explain how the animal escaped. The tiger's enclosure is surrounded by a 15-foot-wide moat, and 20-foot-high walls.

"There was no way out through the door," said Jenkins. "The animal appears to have climbed or otherwise leapt out of the enclosure."

The zoo, which is open 365 days a year, was evacuated immediately after the attack was reported.

The two injured men were in critical but stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital, Fire Department spokesman Lt. Ken Smith said. A call to the supervising nurse at San Francisco General was not immediately returned.

"This is a tragic event for San Francisco," Smith said. "We pride ourselves in our zoo, and we pride ourselves in tourists coming and looking at our city."

Authorities did not believe there were any other people attacked, but because it was dark they could not be certain. Investigators remained on the scene using ladders and flashlights. Smith said a thorough sweep of the grounds would be conducted in the morning.

Investigators working to understand what happened have sketched a chilling picture.

The first attack happened right outside the Siberian's enclosure — the victim died on the scene. A group of four responding officers came across his body when they made their way into the dark zoo grounds, said Mannina.

Then they saw the second victim. He was about 300 yards away, in front of the Terrace Cafe.

The man was sitting on the ground, blood running from gashes in his head. Tatiana sat next to him. Suddenly, the cat attacked the man again, Mannina said.

The officers started approaching the animal, bearing their handguns. Tatiana started moving in their direction. Several of the officers then fired, killing the animal.

Only then did they see the third victim, who had also been mauled.

Although no new visitors were let in after 5 p.m., the grounds were not scheduled to close until an hour later, and there were between 20 and 25 people still on site when the attacks happened, zoo officials said.

There are five tigers at the zoo — three Sumatrans, and two Siberians. Officials initially worried that four tigers had escaped, but they soon learned that only one had left its pen, according to Mannina.

Last December, the animal reached through the cage's iron bars and badly lacerated a zookeeper's arm. The zoo's Lion House was temporarily closed during an investigation.

California's Division of Occupation Safety and Health blamed the zoo for the assault and imposed a $18,000 penalty, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom said in a statement that he was deeply saddened by the latest incident and said a thorough investigation is under way.

Following last year's attack, the zoo added customized steel mesh over the bars, built in a feeding shoot and increased the distance between the public and the cats.

Tatiana arrived at the San Francisco Zoo from the Denver Zoo a few years ago, with zoo officials hoping she would mate with a male tiger.

The zoo will be closed on Wednesday.

my concern is......as i stated it was a siberian tiger, one of the most endagered species....and they killed it.......tigers are born to kill, thats what they do........surely this zoo had tranquilizer darts and people who could admister them

Totally agree with you, shooting it was fucking disgusting, especially coming from an establishment that claims to try and save endangered animals, not one that blasts it's brains out because it does something which comes natural because their security is fucked up!:mad

The only way I could understand that though is if they didnt have the tranqs on hand...it was attacking a man when they shot it wasnt it? So better to shoot it right away instead of if they had to go get tranqs first...though it is such a sad thing. And they should have those on hand anyways.

I am so wondering how the hell it got out.

US tiger death zoo a crime scene

The American zoo where a tiger killed one man and injured two on Christmas Day has been declared a crime scene. Police in San Francisco are now said to be investigating the possibility that the victims taunted the tiger, or even helped it escape from its enclosure.
The San Francisco Chronicle says blood and a shoe were found near a moat which separated the tiger from the public.
The 300lb (136kg) animal, named Tatiana, was shot dead as she loomed over one of the injured men.

Zoo officials say they are baffled as to how the Siberian tiger got out of her enclosure, which is surrounded by a 15ft (4.5m) wide moat and a 20ft (6m) high wall.
They say the gate to the enclosure was closed, and zoo director Manuel Mollinedo says the tiger may have been provoked.
"Somebody created a situation that really agitated her and gave her some sort of a method to break out," he said.

The zoo itself will be remaining closed on Thursday as police continue their investigation.
The body of the dead man, Carlos Sousa, 17, from San Jose, was found with a gaping throat wound outside the tiger's enclosure.
His two friends, whose names have not yet been made public, were found badly injured 300m away.
Police believe the tiger followed the trail of blood they left and was preparing to attack one of them again when police shot her dead.

The attack happened just before closing time, and for some hours police hunted through the zoo in the deepening gloom in the belief that more wild animals could have been free.
The injured men, brothers aged 19 and 23, and also from San Jose, are said to be in a stable condition, but have deep bites and claw wounds on the heads, necks, arms and hands. Doctors say they expect them to make a full recovery.
San Francisco Zoo is home to Siberian and Sumatran tigers.
In December 2006, a keeper at the zoo had her arm severely lacerated when Tatiana reached through the bars of her cage and mauled her during a public feeding.
As a result of that attack the zoo built a new feeding enclosure in its Lion House to protect the trainers as they carried out feedings.

Well there you go!

If they were provoking her .. they deserved it .. isn't it enough they have to live locke dup .. but to be taunted and teased .. is just down right cruel. Darwinism.

and i'm not one of those activist that don't want zoos to be open but I do feel sorry for the animals there. I took tim to the philadelphia zoo for his one birthday and I remember watching a cheetah just pacing back and forth back and forth while the crowd was watching her and taking pictures. It was just horrible to see the poor cat like that. She's meant to be in the wild.

And I would love to work with wild animals, but I know the package that comes with that. It pisses me off when people act all surprised about a tiger attacking a human being.

What happened was, and this is all very preliminary, that 3 boys, all mid to late teens, might have been taunting the tiger. Appearantly the tiger pen's outer wall was only about 12 ft. high, and the AZA recommends 14.5 ft...or something to that effect.

While I agree that killing that magnificient creature was a travesty, as a parent, I can only hope that the policemen that shot the tiger were acting out of self-defense and in the best interests of the public. They weren't dealing with a rogue pit bull or something, they were face to face with the largest cat in the world. I'm sure if the tiger could have been corralled or at least contained while animal control or a zoo keeper retrieved a tranquilizer gun, that's what they would have preferred. Just a sad event.

i dont know what the situation is over there in america but over here we have zoo's....but we also have wildlife parks

what that means is that its basically a zoo but with the animals given room..its a huge tract of land divided into large enclosures.......what you do is drive around it......the nearest one to me,the west midland wildlife park has tigers, lions and african wild dogs....running free in these large enclosures, obviously you keep your car windows shut tight when your in the company of a carnivore.......first time you visit you see no animals with pent up frustrations

good fun too, especially when a large adult male tiger has his face about a foot away from your side window licking his lips

Right, and did you know that most of the UK wildlife parks were designed by the good folks at the San Diego Wildlife park? I met one of the keepers down there and he said he had just gotten back from over there helping in one of the complete re-designs. Now this was about 15 years ago, but still. The San Diego Wildlife park, and there is the world famous San Diego Zoo as well, but the park has a monorail that takes you around the entire park. Zero emissions, you know? I've been to the kind that you drive around, but exhaust can't be go for the animals, you know?

very true...it's worse for circus animals I think...but the way that people are encroaching into wildlife areas, this may be the only that we can keep certain species alive, you know? you can only stop building for so long until you have 20 families under one roof, lol!

we stopped circus animals over here years ago because of the mental problems and cruelty
