There are two main reasons I feel why someone would want to do that.

Firstly and with justification they feel they were born the wrong sex, ever since childhood they have felt that way, and therefore it's the only thing that they can do.

secondly however, sometimes people who are abused or suffer from serious depression, develop these feelings and can be a temporary measure. These are the people who often make the ultimate mistake and then regret.

That is why you have to undergo years of supervision by medical experts to decide that you are doing it for the right reason, though as with anything, some slip through the net.

Then he is screwed for life, I think!
Maybe he's going through a crisis or something, I think people should get profesional help when they want to do something like THAT to their body.

I do believe that people may have hormonal imbalances that make them feel "wrong."

Too much testosterone will make a woman more manly, and perhaps question her sexuality. And the same with estrogen in men. I don't believe it's simply how they feel. I do not believe people are born in the wrong body. That's just horseshit, IMO. Again, I believe it's hormonal causes for such grand decisions and lifestyle choices.

Talk him out of it? If someone were to do that with me if I were in this situation, I'd punch them in the face. No one has the right to do any such thing.

This is such a personal situation and unless you are family, you should have no involvement.

They have to go through serious counseling and through different tests to make sure they are serious about it, once it is done, you can't take it back, so for anyone to do that they must be 100% sure that it is right for them, and if not they will have to learn to live with it and love it..

And when the psychologists advise against the surgery, you can just go down to Mexico and have it done without consultation. I know of someone who did this.

Only you know what you want. If this guy says this is what he wants, maybe he does, and if he does, than thats good, if not, he is the one who has to regret it. I know it wouldn't be a decision I would make (in reverse since i'm a woman) but I can't tell what is right for him. Especially since our bodies are not who we are, but our spirits. I don't judge people on stuff like that, so as long as he's happy, great, and if he regrets it later, thats just something he has to deal with.

I wouldn't trust that at all, I've heard horror stories of people going down to Mexico for certain surgeries! That's a big risk  Over all I feel bad for people who decide things like that, I've seen it on talk shows/in person and they always say they don't feel right and they feel lost and like they don't belong...It's sad

There's really nothing you can say or do, Ian. I do know that legitimate medicine doesn't just do a surgery like that on a whim. There is usually extensive counseling and hormone replacement therapy before the operation is ever performed. We have a patient who is going through the hormone treatment in preparation for the big snip. It's an odd situation at best. It's just like all of the other "oddities" that split off from what society deems as normal. Some will think it's wrong. Some will applaud. I'd say try to treat him/her as a person and respect what is happening, even if that means keeping quiet about it. I myself do not understand why a person would choose this, but I also cannot understand rape, child molestation or schizophrenia either, but they happen.
