Family dog kills one-year-old boy

A one-year-old boy has died after being attacked by a pet rottweiler at his grandparents' home, police have said.
Archie-Lee Andrew Hirst was snatched from his seven-year-old aunt's arms in the yard of the house in Chald Lane, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, on Friday.
He was taken to hospital with serious injuries but died later.
The "seven to 10 stone" dog was shot at the scene by a police marksman. It was destroyed to ensure the safety of others there, a police spokesman said.
The boy's family, including his teenage mother, are now receiving support from specially-trained officers, he said.

Det Supt Steve Payne, from West Yorkshire Police, said the boy was staying with his grandparents during the Christmas holidays.
He said: "What we know at this time is that the dog was a family pet, a two-and-a-half year old female rottweiler, which the family had owned for about six months.
"Although the dog lived in the yard of the premises, it had interacted with members of the family including children, and another dog and cat at the house, and had shown no previous signs of any aggression."

Mr Payne said one of the boy's aunts, aged 16, was caring for him and her two sisters, aged six and seven, in the house.
The 16-year-old girl was upstairs when the seven-year-old carried the baby outside to stroke the dog.
Mr Payne said: "Without any warning, the dog snatched the baby from the youngster's arms and carried him into the yard."
He said the 16-year-old tried to rescue the baby but was unable to do so, despite striking the dog several times.
Paramedics and police arrived within six minutes following an emergency call to police at 1530 GMT, he said.
The baby was taken to Pinderfields General Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.
Multiple injuries
The boy's parents were at a nearby property at the time.
A post-mortem examination has shown Archie-Lee died from multiple injuries consistent with a dog attack.

The death follows the unlawful killing of five-year-old Ellie Lawrenson who was killed by her uncle's dog in St Helen's on New Year's Day 2007.
The illegal pit bull terrier called Reuben attacked Ellie at the home of her grandmother, Jackie Simpson, who was later found not guilty of manslaughter through gross negligence.
Ellie's uncle Kiel Simpson, 24, was jailed for eight weeks at Liverpool Magistrates' Court in May after admitting owning a dog banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
Chris Window, from the Rottweiler Club, said it was very uncommon for attacks of this nature to take place. But he said young children should never be left alone with any large breed of dog. "All breeds of dogs are animals. They do revert to animal instincts. If a dog is confronted with a situation they are not used to, they can react unexpectedly."

in my opinion there had to be something wrong with those dogs. I believe dogs aren't born nasty they are somehow made that. even later in life. When I was really young we had a huge german shepard. My mom used to leave me alone with him on the front porch in my playpen. He was very protective of me and yet what could have been a dangerous dog, never was.

The dog was 2-1/2 years old, they only had it for 6 months and it belonged to the grand parents. Those a three VERY good reasons not to trust the dog around the baby.

If it was the families dog and it grew up around those children it would be another story. But you never leave your children around a dog that didn't grow up with your kids. You have no idea how they will act together and it only takes 1 bite....

Yeah, I grew up with German Shepards around me since I was about 4 months old. I've never had an incident like that happen even remotely with my dogs...now they've gone after adults because they weren't acting correctly...ie running away from them or grabbing on to someone like a hug or handshake...some dogs can be very protective and they obviously don't understand the concept of handshaking.

This is a true tragedy. It unfortunately happens here in the states all the time...usually from pit bulls, but even normally calm dogs like Golden retrievers have had their insane moments.

This guy said it best:

No, actually, even the AKC would say that you had the atypical Pit. I read in one of those magazines in the Vet's office that it would take about 25 generations of rebreeding Pit Bull's in order to work out the aggression that comes naturally in them. That means that maybe after 25 generations of one line of pit bull, with none of the branches showing any aggression, that the dog would be considered a family dog like the Retriever family.

Tragic indeed.

I believe this also in the general sense. We had a very protective dog that we had from a pup and altho she was very protective/fierce like to outsiders she was always meek and loving to kids and family members and/or those who had gotten approval of the family. It's all what they grow up with and/or are exposed to in terms of what they learn from the way they are treated and the immediate family environment.

Yes, exactly. The 2-1/2 years old...have for 6 months, is a tricky one. Ditto to the rest of your post also.
