.... of a book I really didn't want to finish.
Some of you might remember the thread I started about my father. In case you didn't but want to read it this is the link.... http://www.offtopicz.net/showthread.php?t=66186
When I attended the wake I axed the evil stepmother if she had something of his I could have as a keepsake. I told her it would be nice if it could be something I would be able to wear... like a ring or a watch etc. I told her it didn't have to be expensive because it wasn't money I was after. She hummed and hawed and called me in to the bedroom. She opened a drawer and pulled out a small ring box and handed it over to me. I fully expected a ring of some sort but when I opened the box I was taken aback with what was inside.
Rewind to about grade 7. My dad had a glass eye for all of his life due to playing pirates with his brother. Seems he took a stick in his eye. Anywhoo, the glass eyes wear out periodically and they have to get a new one made. He gave me his old one and I decided to have a bit of fun with it. I took it to school and scared the crap out of all my favorite girl type friends. I would cup it in my outstretched hand and cover one of my own eyes with my other hand. Then I would run up to my fav girl type friends yelling, screaming and holding the glass eye out for them to see. That didn't get me in to any trouble until I did it to one of the female teachers in the hallway one day. Apparently it scared the hell out of her and the stupid principal took it away. He promised I could get it back at the end of the school year. Well the end of the year came and I forgot about the eye.
It seems my dad told the evil stepmother the story and she gave me the most recent eye he had. That's what was in the ring box. I shook my head when I opened the box and said to myself... " what the hell am I going to do with this when I wanted something to wear and both my eyes are ok? " I've been thinking about what to do and had an idea a few weeks ago but before I show you I have to say this....
When a boy is growing up he wants his father to be his hero. It doesn't matter what the conditions are the kid just wants dad to be there for him and keep his eye on him to make sure he's ok. Well my dad let me down in life and wasn't my hero nor did he really keep an eye on me when he was around. He made his choices then but as it stands right now he can't make this one. I've made it for him and he will keep and eye on me whether he wants to or not.

It's kind of a bit more feminine that I really wanted but it is what it is. I've had the chain hanging around my neck for at least 35 years. It was a gift from someone very special and I have no intentions of getting rid of that which is more than I can say about the eye. I know I will wake up one day and remove it, put it away and put the teardrop back on the chain.
