Bet she wouldn't do that to her worst enemy, cowardice is the only word that would come to mind
That's where you're wrong. I'm no psychologist but it doesn't take a genius to think that this could very well escalate from animals to human beings.

Unfortunately I am left siding with Dana. Take a look at many of your "classic" Serial Killers. It usually started with torturing / killing animals. :(

It's true, rage like that always goes to weaker beings first, and if they have that missing empathy chip, it will easily go to humans.

She needs psychatriac help instead of a harsher sentence. THere is just something wrong with people like her and in might not be limited to animals.

agreed a harsh sentence will not cure what ails her and will not stop her repeating /escalating to humans

It has been shown that cruelty to animals will possibly lead to the same to humans. Going to a Psychiatric hospital will appease some, but it will not "cure" this type of cruelty. She needs to go to jail for a time.

How exactly does incarceration cure psychological problems? Just curious.

i would imagine it would make them worse, it might deepen her hatred and actually encourage her to be more aggeressive in the future

sure there are programs designed to help offenders rehabilitate but when deeply damaged as she must be to be able to torture a dog in this way, i belive she shoudl be out of jail an in psychiatric care

Often, I sit on the opposite side of the table than you, in regard to criminals.

However, this young lady is 14. If she can get proper help early, there is a good chance she can still be a productive member of society.

She isn't going to get the rehab she needs in Prison.

I think the punishment should really be based on a psychiatric evaluation. That will really give the most clarity.

What exactly will Psychiatric help do for her? Will they teach her to behave correctly? Will medication do the trick? How can someone be taught that their behavior is wrong and change it?

Depending on the sentence/scenario/diagnosis, she could be institutionalized and basically locked up, but receiving medication and therapy intended to improve her behaviors. She may just have a personality disorder that requires some psychiatric fine tuning- she's young enough for intervention.

She deserves punishment if she is not found incompetent, but just throwing a mentally ill person in the cut throat world of jails/prisons can lead to more violent reactions once they're out.

She won't get the electric chair for this, nor life in prison...the point is, she will be back on the streets! How do ya want her? Traumatized in jail or given a decent shot at fixing her fucked head?

That's how I see it, at least.

I agree with both! And there must be some underlying mental/anger problem with her for her to do such a thing to the poor dog. I agree with Panacea too that most of these types of people tend to go the weaklings where they know they're able to do their ill act without retaliation hence soon her next victims wld be children and older aged population. That's a normal pattern with these types. Even with serial killers and pedophiles and paraphilias- same thing

She sure will undergo trial but she wont be sentenced until they stabilize her mentally or that she's able to show control over anger/rage. Hence she's gonna be placed locked up in a Psychiatric facility and may have a legal hold they call it as PC 1370 which means that she's Incompetent to Stand Trial ( due to insanity/anger) or can be an NGRI- Not guilty by reason of Insanity! If she's proven to be so, she will be locked up into a Psychiatric facility again- almost like prison. She just can't be locked up easily in prison as those other inmates and staff are not even gonna be safe around her till she's gone to therapy and maybe treated with Anti-psychotic medications.
