I'm still looking on other's views. Please don't argue points that were argued in the other thread that was closed. I'd like to have civilized debates if that's possible :D

I find the word offensive,.as much as i find the word spastic offensive..That may be due to the fact i have personal experience with it?..maybe im a lil too touchy? But all that is important in my mind is why someone would wish to insult someone with a word so demeaning?...
As someone pointed out the other day, a film made that has the word "retarded" in(as fun)...if racism can be taken from our screens then why cant this?

Jesus christ. Maybe you're a little too touchy? lol. Spastic is actually not so offensive in it's American usage anyway, and considering that's where a lot of our films come from i can't invision it being removed.

You need to broaden your horizons darling. I know that the word is somewhat taboo over here, but in America not so much. It has aquired a new meaning.

There is also a spastics society, so it would be a little harsh to remove the word entirely.

well bloody hell I missed this thread....

I'm terrible at using retarded or tarded all the time. But its never been something I would call exceptional people. its something I use not as an insult at others. I use it more of as a way to say something that is inanimate is stupid...like "oh now that movie was retarded."

Spastic is another word i rarely use. And just because someone you know was called a spastic as an insult doesn't mean it's the same everywhere. Spastic generally means a clumsy person stateside. Doll.

You want to abolish a word because it's an insult on one of the least populated countries in the English speaking world? That's pretty narrowminded.

As long as you understand the words you use, i don't have a problem with anyone saying anthing. Your friends and family with cerebral palsy suffer from spasticity.

I feel that even though "retard" and "spastic" are two words i would never use, people should be allowed to say them as long as they use them correctly. I think that you're right, and whoever called your friend a "spastic" as a derogatory remark is pond life, but the word can be used correctly.

Ok, ty...though you sound very hypocritical to your earlier statements?...how and when do you define when the word can be used correctly?..where is the barrier?..thats like me saying your gay...but in a good way???...um, curious to how you can seperate insult and normality?....

It's not so much what you say, but how you say it. I would never be offended if anyone called me gay. And i doubt many gay people would be either, but it can be hatefull without being offensive.
The word spastic is actually a lot like the word "nigger" in many ways. The problem is it's kind of a medical term, so can't be abolished in the same way.
