Is this word a part of your vocabulary? If so, how is it that you use it?

What I mean is this: Do you use it as a derogatory term for someone with special needs? Do you use it just goofing around without it meaning anything derogatory?

This topic came up at a workshop today and I'm just curious how yas use it.

I don't use the word...... period...... at all........ personally.

I think it has been taken out of context over the years and now people tend to find it far more offensive than is necessary, i mean the word by definition is "to hinder," so if someone said to you "that was a very slow statement" would you be as offended as if they said "that was a very retarded statement."

Personally i'm not offended by it, and i've seen it used as both a joke and as a word to hurt another person, and i think that if someone will stoop so low as to label someone with a word such as that in an attempt to upset them, then it is them who need to think of how they'd describe themselves.

I grew up in the seventies when the term was completely derogatory. I never use it. I certainly don not appreciate anybody that uses it.

I will admit that I'm bad about using it. NEVER at someone that is actually mentally or physically handicapped...but that doesn't make it right, does it??? :(

Do retards know they're retarded? Why is a word coined by a sane minded physician to classify a group of developmentally challenged individuals offensive? :ninja

A Didja Know Fact Brought To You By Dana:

Did you know professionally, chefs in the culinary industry use the word retarding when referring to kneading any type of dough?

Retarding dough during its bulk fermentation

In every bread book I've read, it's always suggested to retard dough during while its proofing (with the exception of pain a l'ancienne). Is there any reason one shouldn't do this during bulk fermentation? I imagine the yeast population is a lot smaller at that point, so It may not have as drastic of consequences. Also, since the cold makes dough much more elastic, it may have a negative effect on doughs that need folding. Has anyone tried this? I think next weekend I might do a little experimenting with this. It's much easier for me to stash a tupperware bin in my fridge than a couche on a sheet pan in bag, which is what got me thinkin. any thoughts?

I asked if you used the word, not chefs, Dana. Unless you in fact are a chef, I don't need that input. It doesn't answer the question and you are just posting it to ruffle feathers as always. It's getting old really fast.
