Hello OTz,

Many of you have probably seen homeless people around where you live or heard on the news or something about them lately. Maybe a homeless person was found dead behind a dumpster, or something else...

I just want to know your opinions about homeless people... cause like, everyone I have met, they are too paranoid or they judge them before they get to understand why they are homeless.

Alot of people believe most homeless people are homeless due to drugs and alcohol or something similar. Yet, there are those out there who just had struggled through a definate hell and now they live on the streets...
I feel bad for them in one way, yet, I also think to myself "If only you tried harder..."

As for myself, If I ever become homeless, my opinion is this: "Don't ever give me money, cause I want to learn to survive without anyone else's help".

I have a lot of sympathy for the homeless. Once you slip down to the lower tiers of society it gets progressively more difficult to get back up. Very few people would actually choose to be homeless. Also, given the number of homeless veterans, you need to spare a thought for them. Especially in winter.

I really feel for the homeless, most people think of them as "lazy" but really that's not the case most of the time, in reality most of them are severely mentally ill or physically disabled and CAN'T work, if I have some extra change to spare I'll give it to a homeless person, they need it more than me.

In some circumstances I can sympathise given they might have been thrown out of their house and therefore unforseen circumstances. But those who are homeless through their own volition, which does happen, have no sympathy from myself and shouldn't get any off anyone else, it's their fault they are there. Fuck them.

I agree, someone who is homeless because they truly just DON'T WANT to work for a living deserve no sympathy, I only feel for Homeless people with Mental or Physical disabilities.

I sometimes give a few of the homeless people where I live money. It depends cos quite a few of them just spend it on alcohol and I don't want to give someone money if they are just going to spend it on getting drunk.

About a year ago when one of Wycombe's more popular tramps disappeared there was a load of facebook groups asking where he was and trying to see if he was ok. Then it was discovered he'd died and loads of people did a memorial thing for him which was nice.

I don't really care if they spend money I give them on alcohol, I figure their lives REALLY suck and that is really the only form of entertainment they have is getting shitfaced, so it doesn't bother me if that's what they choose to do. In the town I lived in before moving out here none of the bums even begged for money, they just all hung out in the midde of town together being drunk and rowdy all day, they were violent too, 4 of them were found dead in the park year before last, and their ringleader that everyone calls "Red eye" disappeared not long after, nobody knows what happened to him we all just assume he's dead.

I was homeless on and off for about a year. Staying in my car for months at a time. I was 19.

Even having a car I could hear people outside talking about how I was asleep in my backseat. You don't learn to live without anyone else's help. You just live.

I lost 50 pounds in 2 months from anorexia that was cause by starvation. I do smoke weed and it was one of the few things that kept me from suicide in those hard times. I believe I was even posting on this forum back when I was sleeping in my car.

I eventually got government assistance with Food Stamps. The economy has started to turn around and I've picked up enough temporary work to get me out of the car. Now I work at Pizza Hut and life is really turning around.

Being homeless is the hardest thing anyone could endure. In my opinion we need to get the homeless off of the street if we ever plan on doing something about this problem. If I had gone on in my poor physical and emotional condition I could have turned out dead easily.

Damn, sorry you had to endure that.

I often wonder, how hard exactly would it be to get everyone off the streets? Surely it'll be worth it for the benefit to society.

I had a phase of homelessness myself in my late teens: Evicted from an apartment (which I'd paid rent on) because of BCCI going tits up - my flatmates and I were given 24 hours notice to leave the property. I was unemployed at the time and was amazed at how the social services could do nothing to help.

I ended up squatting for a while, sleeping at friend's places and so on. It was pretty tough to get back on my feet to be honest, and wouldn't have been able to do it without a chance meeting with my estranged step-father. Had he not helped me, god knows where I'd be right now.

There are many homeless about 50 miles from me...are all of them deserving?..No..many of these people walk all day collecting cans and going through trash to make a few bucks...in reality they are working for about a dollar an hour.
Rent is very high to begin with now toss in some utilities and food a car gas and insurance ...minimum wage does cut it...if tossing burgers would supply the home food and utilities many would opt for that rather than sleep under a bridge.
But yes there are those that choose to remain homeless as long as they can afford a couple cheap bottles of wine a day and some food they are happy...this isnt the majority though IMO.
Once you lose your self material worth getting back afloat can be very difficult...you need a car for a job..you need clean clothes..you need an alarm...hell you need an address for your forms.
Getting out isnt as easy as it sounds as there are obstacles along the way...you have to have money to job hunt,to work etc.
What are the chances of some guy that hasnt had a shower in a months has had on the same clothes, has no address, has no car of getting a job that pays enough to provide rent utilities food a car gas and insurance...pretty slim to none.
